----------------------  The Thread that started this conversation;
Mr WeCVO and I have the good fortune to be located only a couple of hours south of DC and have a long weekend in front of us with no house chores screamin at us to be done. We slept in till 5:00 AM Saturday, soaked in the hot tub with coffees and made choices for the day. Figuring on a gorgeous day ducking between rain showers, we decided to just stick to I-95 to Dumfries - our old stomping grounds - and then see what happened. Well, just 30 minutes on the road and it rained all the way to Quantico - 7 miles South of our destination.  As we powered up the road, I was so thankful that my ride has so much protection.  With the lowers, fairing and windshield, I barely felt the rain. With totally trashed looking SEEGs we pulled into East Coast HD in Dumfries. Some of old friends were there, we BSd a bit, then decided to move out to Fort Washington, MD where one can swipe your HOG card and get the Rolling Thunder pin.  We got caught up in a group of 270 riders who came from LA to DC to ride the tribute to our veterans and salute the wall.  When we finally extracted ourselves from our new friends, we drove over to the dealership. We are starting to think we have spent just way too much time at shops, cause there is just nothing new that we want or need, so we jawjacked a little then headed our bikes back home.  Bikes got baths and put away happy.  A short little 300 mile soiree.

Then Sunday morning - with a real destination and time in mind, we were in the tub at 4:00 AM and on the road by 6:00 to ride to Dumfries again, but this time was to line up for the police escorted ride up the HOV lanes to the Pentagon parking lot.  Hundreds of thousands of bikers were in Washington yesterday for the annual Rolling Thunder memorial ride. We got to meet about 20 of our favorite friends of our old chapter and had a very good visit before driving a most painfully slow ride into the district.  Every road, every overpass lined with those that come out to cheer the riders on.  Flags and peace signs.  Wheel chairs and crutches. We actually did not go into the Pentagon, but rather passed it to ride straight into town where we cheered the riders for three hours as they drove past the mall in their tribute.  Hour after hour, bike after roaring bike, all ages, all bikes, some with smiles, some with tears, all with pride.  A tour of Thunder Alley and back home.  Again, another gorgeous day, over 300 miles and a feeling like we made a difference, albeit very small.

Today -   Yet to be seen.

Mrs living an hour northwest of the city and working in the city for over 24 years all I can say to those that aren't as close as we are,  if you have never been to ROLLING THUNDER  do your self a favor and plan a trip next year. I'm glad you and the Mr had a great weekend. It is a heart moving event. I worked Saturday got off Sunday went home and went to bed for a few hours. So I did not make it this year. I even had an invitation to hang out with the Booze Fighters. Maybe next year.

This is actually my 3rd rolling thunder and the first time I have ever rode in it. It was pretty cool, and actually the first time it hasnt rained! I rode up sunday am left the beach about 7 and rode 264-64-95 the whole way. Everything went great, then after thunder alley took a ride out to warrenton for some ice cream then down 17 home. Great day.

So I wear ear plugs everytime I ride, and good thing. Some idiots seem to think that sending their straight piped EVO or twin cam to ELECTRONIC RETARD is cool, in the process deafening the biker next to them. It is easy to see why the time will come when your exhaust will be tamper proof.

Tony1968,
Next time you do a loop similar to that one, shoot for Carl's in Fredericksburg. It is on Route 3 right in town and is a major stop/meeting point. Really good frozen custard made on location... makes a great end to a great day.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Maybe that should be a new thread... great stops along the way...  [smiley=beerchug.gif]

I found this article that captured the ride from the perspective of one who actually did the real ride and tips for another year.Rolling Thunder XVIII, 29 May 2005    I had heard the numbers of 500,000 bikes before and seeing it in the article reminded me how hard it is to arrange a meet of a few at an event of this size.  We did see a few CVO bikes - quite a few, but always on the move.   [smiley=laugh.gif]  As it should be.   [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

I was in the before 10:30 group so I was close to the bathrooms, food and water. The CMR are great about water cause it did warm up. I saw about 7 CVO's beside my own 2 yellow SEEG, 3 SEEG red, 1 SEEG purple, and 1 blue SERG. I was in the 1st column of the 3rd parking lot section (sectioned by the ditch and light poles)  I did bring that poor marine a cold bottle of water.

What an event...I have not been in over 7 years, however it sounds like little has changed, other than the attendance which has grown...

Great!!!!

I sure hope I can hook up with some of you members that make this ride in '06.  I've never made it and finally after all these years think I'm ready.  Keep me in mind if anyone plans for it next Spring.  thanks, spyder (VN Vet '68-'69)     [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Spyder....my first trip to the "Wall" was both the worst and best day in my recollection of 'Nam.  Rolling Thunder is obviously a remarkable and patriotic tribute that has to be experienced to be truly appreciated, but a couple of days alone prior to the event was  irreplaceable for me.  I'm planning on making the visit again next year with a least a day of private time to thank the many brothers who rest on the Wall as well as the quiet heros who are not officially recorded there.    Maybe we can hook up and share a memory or two.

Yeah BLM777......thanks!  I will look forward to it.  You'd be coming right by here, so it'd be realitively easy.........It's usually right after Myrtle Beach Spring Rally, isn't it?  I'm marking it down for this year.  Don't need to put it off any  longer.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]   spyder

Reservation already made, Candy.  Been going the last 10 years. Missed last year because of my little accident. I arrive in D.C. Friday morning and leave around 4 pm on Sunday. I leave Buffalo on Thursday morning and stay over in York and party at the Wheelie Bar there Thursday night. Friday night I do Georgetown for dinner and then go over to Old Town for drinking. Saturday it Georgetown for breakfast and then off to Fort Washington H-D for lunch and end up in Fairfax H-D for dinner. Sunday it's the ride to the Pentagon from Patriot H-D and then get into D.C. before noon to take in all the thunder. In between all this I try to get to Arlington cemetery  and to Annapolis for Graduation which is on Saturday. It always been a fun time and Pennsylvania is a great state to ride in.

P.S in 04 there where all those locust, never seen such a thing. Think they say it happens ever 7 years.

Lugnut, thanks for the post.  Sounds like you've got a great itenirary mapped out over the years.  I know that BLM777, myself, and HARLEYBILL are 'planning' on attending this year.  Maybe we can keep this thread alive and work out some coordination of a group meeting/ride or something.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]   spyder

I'm planning on being there (have been making the trip for past several years), have the time off already reserved. Probably be up there sometime Saturday if not Friday. Visiting Fairfax H-D on Saturday then hanging with friends that night, and doing ride from Fairfax on Sunday morning to Pentagon. Hope to see some of you there.
