Problem with new LED fuel gauge
« on: June 21, 2008, 08:12:35 PM »

I installed flush mount LED fuel gauge and cap last month and when I filled the bike yesterday, I noticed that it only shows 6 LEDs with full tank and I remember it showing more before (at least 7 or maybe 8).  Also there used to be a fuel pump icon but that has disappeared also.
To make the matter worse, I bought online from Chicago Harley.
Surprisingly it is made in Germany (it must the brand name on the box that made it fail).

Here is a picture of the gauge with full tank:

Bought same one from our local dealer for my wife's RK. Had the same problems. We've replaced the light section 3 times, and finally seems to be OK. Each time the parts guy just handed me another package and said 'bring the broken one back.'  They've had quite a few returns.
Of course, it's still no more accurate than the dial was, which wasn't accurate at all. >:(

I think it was Howie.  But could be mistaken.  In any case thought I remembered someone talking about those fuel gauges being available with different color illumination.  Against those dash lights that blue isn't a great choice (if there actually are options).

The LED gauge came standard with the '07 SERK. It has seven lights and a small fuel pump symbol. The fuel pump symbol is always visible, it is not an indication of low fuel. The color of the LED's is an orangy red, quite well matching the illumination of the main instrument.

Ride safely,

So all after market gauges come with blue LEDs and the one installed by Mo Co is orange?  very odd and also why didn't they put it on 08 SERKs?  I wounder if they would replace a bad gauge on 08 serk with blue lights, that would s&ck.

I decided to update the post for those who buy harley parts online.  I talked to Chicago Harley, they are sending me a new gauge with a return shipping label so I don't have to pay the return shipping on broken part.  It's sad that we need to be aware of HD's Warranty policy all the times.
