Removal of lowers
« on: June 01, 2005, 02:17:40 PM »

I live in Oregon, so we get some pretty severe temp shifts depending on where we ride...  And I have discovered that the bike, ('05 SEEG), actually runs cooler in hot temps with the lowers on and the vents open that it does with the lowers removed.  (It seems to funnel more air across the engine that way...)  However, the dealer says "you should remove the lowers if the temp goes over 75 to keep the engine cooler".    No lowers keeps me coolers, but I don't get as much engine cooling..... Any comments from the peanut gallery?  What are you guys discovering?

I run my lowers year round and did on my last two Ultra Classics, too.  Now I live where it doesn't get "real hot" only 110 to 115 in the summer.  I do have the leg fairing vents from eGlide Goodies and they seem to funnel the heat away especially from the rear cylinder, more than with no leg fairings.  JMHO

I also run the lowers all year long down here in the swamp.  With the Hoppes fairing vents, I don't get the hot leg and I also have noticed that the spoiler effect of the lower design funnels a great deal of air to the engine that was not present with them off.  Guess I'd leave them on anyway 'cause I got no other place to stow my "anti hijacking" hardware in the summer.

Who knows, I guess it is possible that HD thought through the air flow when designing the lowers.

Works part of the year Spyder.  Almost hate to admit it, but I'm real prone to riding in a T, shorts and flip-flops......about as close to "nekkid" as one can get on a "motorsickle".   [smiley=laugh.gif]

BLM, you SHOULD be ashamed to admit it. FLIP-FLOPS!  Tell me it ain't so.  A experienced rider like yourself should know that's  over the line.  OK, I've ranted enough, but your Mother would not lighten up so quickly.  It's like running w/ a sharp stick in both hands.  Ride safe (and cool) brother.   [smiley=sunny.gif]  spyder

hmmm,  Hubbard should be able to back me up on this....   If you keep your feet planted at the Christmas tree, (starting lights), and shift with your left hand down the strip, you wear pretty good sized holes into the front of your boots...  Then on other, (Longer than 1/4 mile) rides, this allows the air flow to come in the front of your boot, (which you should always wear while riding), which then flows up the leg, across all the hot sweaty parts, and out the top of your collar, which keeps you cool.  All you have to do is point yer toes and go go go!    [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Jock....Nope, those aren't the Hoppes vents.  I'll take a pic of the vents and post them when I get my scoot back next week.  Getting some mods done and ready for the next trip to the Smokies.
