Advice on which roads to cross the Sierras
« on: June 28, 2008, 01:12:28 AM »

in a couple weeks, i am heading off on a 4 day motorcycling camping trip with my son. We are starting at Lake Tahoe and heading south to 395. i was thinking about taking one of the roads to cross the sierras (88, 4, 108 or 120). My thought was to cross one of these roads and then head back east across the Sierras on another one of these roads (camping on the way). i am sure each one is pretty spectacular but curious what people thought of the differences. i would assume 120 would be the most crowded since it goes through Yosemite?.  Before we head across the sierras, we will probably go down 395 a bit and visit Bodie and Mono Lake. Definately want to do some fishing.  thinking about just a couple hundred miles a day with lots of stopping and fishing.  Anyway, let me know what you think of these particular roads - 88,4,108 and 120.

appreciate any advice

best

Free, All of them are great. 108 and 4 will have the most and tightest twisties so getting stuck behind a motorhome can be a pain as there are no passing zones. 120 will cost you a small fee to go through Yosemite but if time allows, veer down to the loop to see the tourist sights(half dome etc.) 88 (and 89) are great roads. Whatever your choices, hit them early enough to avoid traffic. there are lots of scenic roads up there so you may have to choose you favorite passion, fishing or riding. We live in Los altos and have a house in Sonora so we have ridden up there quite a bit. Let me know when you are going and maybe we can hook up. Roger

You DON'T want to be heading south on old 395 on a Sunday. In spite of a rules of the road "advisory" from the State of California these bozos stack up 20, 30 of these Prarie Schooners in a row. In my young and foolish days, I rode the yellow line and passed 22 of em at once with Beags and some of the bros from the IHMC. Looking back on it, I had to be freaking nuts. Anyway, old 395 is also pretty boring even without the road hoggin RV clowns. Suggest you follow the above advice.

Last year we crossed on CA168 to NV266. The ride was great!

Just did two round trips thes past two weekends on 49/88/89 and did part of 395 this past weekend, very little snow at the mountain tops, passes are open but did see quite a few dead deer in and around the roads so what out for the moving venison steaks!  :2vrolijk_21:
