Fairing Gold Leaf Peeling?
« on: June 28, 2008, 11:09:45 AM »

Hi,

I have followed the threads about overlapping gold leafing and seams but my bike did not seem to have any.  I got rained on hard yesterday and now I notice that at the posterior end of the fairing gold striping there seems to be lifting up and peeling.  This may have always been there, but is this something I should expect as "normal".

I will try to post pictures:

Does that area still seem to be under clear-coat?  If so, it has always been there.  If you can feel a rough edge, the clear has probably peeled along with the gold leaf.  If this is the case, get it back to the dealer.

The upper portion of the gold stripe is palpable, but it is similar to the stripe on the front of the fairing.  The lower portion feels sharper as if it were the edge of a tape stripe.  In the middle of the gold stripe there is a palpable raised area, feels like a fold of tape - I can feel it more than see it.

If I did not know better I would think the stripe was taped on and the paint cracked where the tape was bent around the sharp edge of the fairing.  This may well have always been like this - but is it something I should try to have the dealer replace?  What does this area look like on other people's bikes?

Have to agree with the above.  Even though it will mean the hassle of replacement.  Whether it looked that way from day one or not it does look like crap.  Might as well try to get a new one for free.

Mine looks about the same in that area.

So this is apparently the way is is SUPPOSED to look?  They could have simple stopped the stripe where the fairing ends rather than wrapping the gold leaf and paint around the end of it.  Looks like something I would have done myself rather than something that came designed to look like that.  :'(

I will have the dealer look at it, but if this is the norm there is not much point in replacing the fairing as the new one will look exactly the same...

Does anybody with a Duracell not have a fairing that looks like this?  :confused5:

Here's a followup.  The technician looked at it when I brought the bike in for my 2500 mile service and told me they will "touch it up" when I bring it in for my Traxxion cartridges and Bitubo shocks.  Not sure what it will look like after being "touched up" but likely a lot better than it does at present.

Is this what the Duracell fairings are supposed to look like?  There was another Duracell at Appalachian HD but he drove of just before I got a chance to go take a look at it.

Moved to Germany, had to wait for my bike, bike got damaged in shipping.  >:(  I finally got around to checking this gold leaf flaking with the dealer (now Harley-Davidson
Bruchmühlbach GmbH) who sent pictured to HD.  They agree this is not good and will send me a new fairing.  ;D

While checking out the bike they also found the chrome on the tank is apparently bubbling up in places.   :(  It looks like when rust starts to come through and the paint starts to get small raised bumps from underneath.  They say they have seen this a few times and certain batches seem to have this problem.

We then noticed the passenger side of the driver's backrest is missing about 1/2 of the staples that hold the leather to the backrest.   :'(

--------------------------

On the way home from the dealer my heated hand grips stopped working.....  ???

On the one hand I keep replacing parts with brand new ones, so 20% of my bike is still brand new.  I already had the fuel pump, heads, valve guides, ECR replaced for a recall.

OTOH this is getting REALLY OLD!  I hope this is not what to expect during the next 10 years I plan to keep this bike!

I just looked at mine (12 months and 17k) and there is some visible roughness but smooth to the touch.  Looks to be a function of wrapping around the fairing.  Clear coat and wax should keep mine good.  I do have a rock chip on the right side right in the gold leaf.  No way to repair according to the dealer, just order a new fairing (no way).  I keep applying clear coat to it every so often.

I'm still waiting for my new fairing and other parts to arrive.  I hope the new parts don't have issues too.

As I said earlier, I had the same problem with the Gold Leaf on the edges of the front fairing, rough surface and it appeared that the gold leaf was separating from the fairing.

A HD Rep looked at my bike when I had it in for the starting issues (finally resolved!) and told the dealer to BUFF off the rough surface.  They did and when I saw the fairing it did not look any better.....the dealer ordered a replacement fairing and I had it installed two weeks ago, waited a year and a half to get it resolved, but it is none done!  New fairing looks good, finally very happy with the 2008 SEUC Duracell!!!!!

I've looked at alot of 2008 Duracells and many scoots have the same issue.
