Louis, quite some time ago one of the members here (who shall remain nameless) rather sarcastically dubbed the mostly useless indash air temperature gauge as the "rain gauge."  The seemed to have similar utility on a motorcycle after all.  For some reason the name stuck.  And for many it has been the rain gauge ever since.

And what's really frustrating is the MoCo knows that's the most useless guage in the fairing too.  But yet they keep putting it in year after year, after year.  The only useful one they came out with to replace it is the oil temp gauge but then that is not installed properly if you go by the instructions and your bike has an oil cooler (like most of the CVOs come with).   So if you let the dealer install it, it's rendered pretty much useless too.  I thought the most rediculous aftermarket guage to replace the rain guage was the compass.  That really made a lot of sense to me.   :nixweiss:  Especially since just about every FD owner that I know has a GPS unit.

RD, the compass was never intended to be a navigational instrument.  It was simply a vertigo inducement tool because on so many installs it just went round and round and round.  And as for having the dealer install the oil temp gauge.....  Really....  The dealer :nixweiss: ?  Right there's the problem :huepfenlol2: .

The product development folks at Harley determined many moons ago that a bike with a fairing would provide such an effective shield between the environment and the rider that some sort of indicator would be required to keep said rider informed of changes in that environment.  And the ambient air temperature gauge was born.

Somewhere around 2010-2012 you won't need to worry about the air temp gauge any more.  That gauge will be retired, and the hole will be filled with a coolant temp gauge.  Preliminary testing has shown it to be about as useless and inaccurate as the rest of the gauges, so traditional Harley riders will feel right at home with the new gauge.

Hell no!

FWIW it looks like the oil temp gauge is actually a good match on these though.

Little square or rectangular module.  Often up close to the headlamp so as to report the heat of the halogen bulb.  Have no idea where the SERG's might be hanging.  Turn the switch on 60 degree day and it immediately reports 100 degrees outside.  Don't know whether to wear a sweathshirt or strip naked.

Yes it was.  The first time I had reason to remove my outer fairing, I spliced in some extra wire and moved the sensor down to the bottom of the steering head.  After waving the magic wand and declaring abracadabra, my temp gauge actually began reporting the real ambient temperature.  Amazing!

It looks like the MoCo finally got tired of reading all the snide comments on the dreaded "internet" and moved the sensor out of the fairing.  Still looks like it would pick up a lot of heat from the engine at low speeds or sitting still, but at least it should read much closer to reality than the ones in the fairing.

Thank you very much. That makes sense. I have always changed that thing for the oil temp gauge, as soon as that became available with an aluminum dial.
