Engine "screams" at 50-60mph...
« on: July 02, 2008, 10:49:34 PM »

I just bought an 08 fxstsse2 and i am noticing that at 50mph - 60 mph (when in sixth gear) the engine, or something, screams, if you will.  I don't have this happening on my softail deluxe... any thoughts?
I only have 100 miles on it, but still, doesn't sound right...

thanks

Your senses are correct: there is something wrong!  None of us can really hear it, so it's clearly something the dealer should listen to.

TRY keeping it in 5th gear up to 65 with stock bike (no pipes) then put it in 6th

They will say that is normal...I don't go near 6th til 70...The tires are noisy on these things so are thr drive belts and 5th gear...3k rpm is a good engine speed, JMHO of course!   :huepfenjump3:

If it's the engine it will scream in other gears under similar load at the same RPM's.

I have noticed a "vacuum cleaner" sucking sound that comes from the air cleaner. It's pretty cool if you ax me.

I have suffered the sucking sound from my savings account with these things for years.   :P
It is ok I'd just waste the rest on cigar, boats, booze and broads... ::)

when i did it again, its actually 5th gear, and when i took it into the shop, they said it's how the new six speed tranny is and that there is nothing wrong with it... when i get to sixth (about 60 to 65) it goes away... strange... but that's what they said...

The cut of the gear and its location on the shaft give it a whine...No biggie, try riding an old HD if you want noises!   :P

Enjoy the scoot, ride the paint ofin it!  Knees to the breeze   :huepfenjump3:

You need to be thankful when your Harley makes noises.  When it's not making noise, it's either out of gas or broken.

shafe,

In all seriousness, try changing the trans lube to a real gear oil instead of the SYN3 that's in it now.  Redline Shockproof Heavy is a popular choice, as is Bel-Ray 85-140 Gear Saver.  There is a new lube out from Spectro that claims to be formulated specifically for the Harley 6 speed to help reduce the noise as well, and I'm sure others will chip in their suggestions for a better lube if I missed any.

I think the owners manual tells you to avoid using 6th gear during the breakin period. I remember reading something about this.
