Good Friend Goes down...hits deer
« on: July 03, 2008, 12:39:15 PM »

Yesterday a good buddy of mine and my old man's went down while leading a pod through Utah. Mid afternoon, about 12:30 pm a buck jumped out in front of him causing the wreck to occur. His wife was riding behind him and saw the whole thing but managed to stop before making matters worse. She mentioned she never even saw the deer run onto the road until the collision. She said it was the most frightening experience he has ever had. He had to be care flighted to the nearest hospital and then to a larger hospital in Las Vegas but after thorough examinations he's stable with some broken ribs, severe cuts around his ankle, a bruised up body, and a couple of deep cuts on his face (3/4 helmet).

The deer's hindquarters were mangled and half of his antlers were ripped off so he had to be put down. The bike is completely totaled. Could have been worse, though, as some don't come out of something like that alive. I'm usually extra careful when riding through wooded areas in the morning and in the evening but this has reminded me to be careful all day. Those animals are so unpredictable and the slightest thing can spook them or cause them to jet across the road.

Be careful out there and ride safely.

Sorry to hear about the wreck, glad it not a funeral.
The only good deer is served with mushrooms taters and a good red wine IMO.
Those things and razorbacks need to be hunted to the edge of extinction.

I agree to be careful. This is deer season for vehicles. I never hit one on the bike but have bagged a few in the cage. THE MUFFMAN

Sorry to hear about your friend's deer encounter.  I've been through that myself.  Because of that I try not to ride at night because they are really thick here in the Black Hills.  From what I see and read, the population of deer is exploding.  If world hunger is a problem, I suggest increasing the tag limit by a huge margin, and help solve this problem.  I'd personally rather hit a deer with a bullet than my sickle.

Wow, hope he heals up!

I have been leaving work really late the last few weeks and am really worried about this myself...there are tons of deer on Camp Lejeune and I am just hoping the same doesn't happen to me.

Deer and drunks are the two scariest things on the roads IMO.  Neither one is predictable, and often even the most cautious rider can do nothing about them before a collision results.

Just a reminder, ride safe out there!

Sorry about your friend.
I agree with you Pat.  However, the deer in colision usualy end up dead and the drunk end up killing others and living to talk about it.  We have a huge population in NJ and not many places to hunt them.  You can see them at 10 am on the side of the highways grazing 20 feet from the cars going by at 75 mph.

Has anyone tried those ultr frequency deer repelant for deer on a bike yet?

You can hunt drunks in NJ?  Dayum!

I almost never ride at dusk.  However, it's my favorite time to.  My only saving grace is the deer in my area are nearly tame and not so freaked out by traffic.  If I see one grazing near the road I slow waaaaay down to be sure.

Not yet, but I haven't given up yet.  As for deer, I always have a pair of rubber gloves, a couple of big garbage bags and a knife in the back of my suburban.  Just can't say no to fresh venison.
My wife used to call me Bamby killer, until she hit a deer (actually deer hit the van).
I do notice that with loud pipes, they run away.

My buddy and I had a moose run out into the road after us.  He accelerated the RK, the moose stopped, turned and tried to get me coming right at him.  Swerved and  that was that.  The road had a passing lane so I had somewhere to go.  Now that is scary!  Almost needed new scivies.  Meredith, NH

He sounds like a lucky so-and-so, this could have been so much worse.  Good luck to him and his wife.
The poor cow must have fretting some, good job his mates were around to help.

Ride safe out there folks!
