Replacment Bulbs??? Whats best?
« on: July 03, 2008, 06:35:48 PM »

I just bought the Harley  dual Hal. Headlight and new Hal. spots to put on my 04 SE Electra-Glide, now I want to upgrade the stock bulbs thats in them, the spots are 27Wts , headlight has 35/55 wts I think these are right, I have already moved my spots to the fender tip light circuit, (which has my MP3 Player on it) so that reduces the load a little, so my question is what would be the best to get at the local auto store for better light,  Silver star? or Ect??   I know they make 35 and 55 wt for the spots, and they are numerous bulbs for the head light, what would be good for the head light, I've seen 90/100 wt from kuryakyn and I hear of the H letters, just confused as to the max I can put on and not melt anything, thanks for any info,

Chester, the stock reflectors aren't very good.  That dual bulb reflector isn't much better.  In combination with regular bulbs it's just a poor headlight.  The best thing we've collectively found for headlight upgrade is going to HID.  With that housing you've got it's a simple chore.  Not inexpensive, but easy to do.

It's also about the only way you can guarantee not outrunning your headlight's effectiveness.

Nicely stated.

And thanks to a link that Puzzled posted earlier we know of HID kits at less cost than those that had been most common here before.  Much less cost.  Here's a dual H9 kit for your new reflector housing for $120.00.

Has anyone tried these? Do you know what else is needed besides the bulb for installation? How difficult is it to install? (i.e. is it a job I can do or should I leave it for Chief?)

Puzzled described doing an H4 install.  Looking at the site's pictures and descriptions the kits are complete.  Or at least as complete as they can for our uses.  We might need a few terminals or something to complete bringing it all together.  But nothing expensive beyond what they provide.

It's a kit that combines ballast and igniter.  That space saving and lack of another set of connections is nice for our purposes.  Installing the lights isn't a touch chore AJ.  Get a couple of longnecks and go for it.

That being said, is this the part I need for my bike?

The H9 8000K?

AJ, I can't ever remember which years got which headlight reflector.  If you've got the dual bulb reflector that's the kit you want.  The color temp (the 8000k) is as much a matter of personal preference as anything else.  The "whiter" your color temp the closer it will look to your spotlights.  8000k will look almost frost blue compared to your spotlights

I don't think you've got the single bulb reflector like the 04s and 05s did stock.  If you do, however, you'd need a single bulb kit rather than a dual bulb H9 kit.

So what... go pull the fairing? Alright, I've got the service manual right here.

No, you can tell just by looking at the nose.  You'll see either two separate bulbs one over the other or just one single bulb in the middle.  Pretty sure yours is the dual bulb reflector though.

It's almost 4 in the morning, do you really think I'm going downstairs to look? I'm in my jammies.
P/N 68096-04 High Beam Halogen, P/N 68881-01 low beam halogen
2 bulbs. I guess that means the H9 in whatever color.

Remembered seeing it recently.  A picture is worth... something.  I always forget that line :nixweiss: .
