Oil- can I mix?
« on: July 03, 2008, 07:43:05 PM »

Ok, - Question is...

Just had the 1,000 mile service, Dealer said using a quart per 1,000 would be normal?

Do I have to buy HD oil or can I mix with any syn oil , Mobil One etc, If I can which Mobil as I saw a couple types for Motorcyles at the auto part store today

Thanks

A quart per 1000 miles!!!!??

Nothing normal about that unless you are riding an old wore-out bike

If you're in a pinch, don't sweat mixing. If you can, match type, syn or conv, but brand doesn't matter much if you're just topping off.

It's not nearly as disaterous as mixing wives and girlfriends. ;)

Woa!! A quart in 1000 miles is normal?   :o   That's not normal in today's engines.   Mine hardly uses any oil between 5K changes.  You can mix synthetic oils, just like in an emergency, you can add dino oil to synthetic.  However, if you add dino, you should change the oil at the earliest possible chance you get.  A lot of us run Mobil 1 V-Twin and Amsoil synthetic oils in our bikes.  Mobil 1 V-Twin is probably more readily available if you're away from home, as you found out, being sold in most major auto stores.

George, why did the subject of oil consumption come up with your dealer?  If you only have 1000 miles, it's too soon to be worrying about oil consumption since it's normal to use some oil during the break-in period.

My suggestion would be to stick with one brand of oil when possible rather than mixing brands.  Incompatibilities are probably quite rare, but it is always possible due to proprietary formulas for the additive packages.  One reason I chose to use Mobil 1 V-Twin instead of Amsoil was the availability of Mobil pretty much anywhere.  If I can't find the V-Twin stuff, I can add the Mobil 1 15W50 automotive oil with total confidence.  As for what to mix with SYN3, however, I haven't a clue.  IMHO, the best thing to do with SYN3 is to leave it in the bottle and use something else.

George, just to clarify one thing from the commentary so far; a quart in a thousand miles is considerable consumption on a modern engine.  On the very first 1000 miles, however, I'd choose not to be concerned.  If it continues at that pace it is something that should be addressed with the dealer though.  His remarks to the contrary it's more than you should be asked to accept.

It was when I picked up the bike and the Ser Mgr was going over the bike,  I thought it was a 'weird' statement at the time, but I had a 4 hour ride in front of me . Today I was picking up some stuff for the car and thought ,hm  I should pick up a qt of oil, that's my story and I will stick to it, Maybe I will have a differant for the wife and make up a fancy one for the girlfriend, Oh wait I am married now, no more girlfriends DAMM....

I will make a phone call on Sat AM and ask the question again.

Thanks !!!

Just to be clear, It has not used any oil at this point, now making the sewing machine noise, thats something I will wait and see on as the dealer I bought it from and did the 1,000 mile will not be the normal guy now . But the wrench who changed the oil said the sound was normal, might go away might not, This time I had rode the bike for the 'free' service and I had 4 hours home, etc.......

I plan on riding allot this month and then go see my local dealer, I am trying to get involved with the Local HOG chapter, Dealer has only own the place for a year now and everyone here seems to like him and his wife. Hopefully we will have a Good Dealer here
