George, just to clarify one thing from the commentary so far; a quart in a thousand miles is considerable consumption on a modern engine.  On the very first 1000 miles, however, I'd choose not to be concerned.  If it continues at that pace it is something that should be addressed with the dealer though.  His remarks to the contrary it's more than you should be asked to accept.

I agree, 1 quart in 1000 miles on a modern engine is excessive consumption.  I'll try to avoid my normal smart-azz comments about Harley and modern being mutually exclusive, and just mention that the last I heard Harley hadn't updated their definition of excessive oil consumption in probably 15 years or more.  Be prepared for a fight if you have a dealer trying to avoid warranty repairs, or one who has to get prior approval from the MoCo.

Personally, I've owned 2 Twin Cams and neither used a full quart between changes once they were broken in.

If you're in a pinch, don't sweat mixing. If you can, match type, syn or conv, but brand doesn't matter much if you're just topping off.

It's not nearly as disaterous as mixing wives and girlfriends. ;)

It was when I picked up the bike and the Ser Mgr was going over the bike,  I thought it was a 'weird' statement at the time, but I had a 4 hour ride in front of me . Today I was picking up some stuff for the car and thought ,hm  I should pick up a qt of oil, that's my story and I will stick to it, Maybe I will have a differant for the wife and make up a fancy one for the girlfriend, Oh wait I am married now, no more girlfriends DAMM....

I will make a phone call on Sat AM and ask the question again.

Thanks !!!

A potential suggestion.  If the Service Manager said this already than ask sales next time.  Then after the sales person gives you a rosier expectation as part of his pitch ask service again.  If there's a contradiction you then have every ground to ask for a documented specification from something more highly placed than a local dealer weenie.

The Day My Wife Met My Jim's 120
by twolanerider

I had me a nice bike,
yes sir I did.
Seven-fifty budget for upgrades I had.
I had me a nice bike,
yes sir I did.

I had me a nice wife,
yes sir I did.
An opinion on upgrades yes sir she had.
I had me a nice wife,
yes sir I did.

She got me a V-rod,
yes sir she did.
Then I picked out another, yes sir I did.
Told her I was wrong,
yes sir I did.

She gave me "that look,"
yes sir she did.
I suffered some shrinkage, yes sir I did
But I got me that V-Rod,
yes sir I did.

Could've fixed me an engine,
yes sir I could.
But the Jim's it was bigger, yes sir it was.
Now I sleep on a nice counch,
yes sir I do.

Ok, - Question is...

Just had the 1,000 mile service, Dealer said using a quart per 1,000 would be normal?

Do I have to buy HD oil or can I mix with any syn oil , Mobil One etc, If I can which Mobil as I saw a couple types for Motorcyles at the auto part store today

Thanks
Or a 1973 Mustang with worn out Valve guides..............

this is only a 2 cylinder engine.....losing that much oil in this engine is way over the top

If someone wanted to work at it I bet there's another country song in there somewhere....

If you're losing 32oz per 1K miles............something ain't right.  Be that as it may, IMHO, mixing syns is permissable in a pinch (on the road), but should be drained...............possibly flushed, depending on the mixture..............and refilled with syn of same brand/spec ASAP.  JMHO!!

IF your dealers right, I've really screwed up.  ???   Put a 3000 mile trip on the Serk and did not use more than a couple of ounces of oil !     Somethings wrong here , wheres that warranty. I should be burning a hell of a lot more oil ! Come to think of it, my last HD did not meet that oil burning spec either.  :nixweiss:   :P

That is what H-D recommends, and I agree too.  The additives, even though required to be compatible with each other, may react and cause an undesirable result.  I'd hate to have a corrosive chemical reaction occur inside an aluminum engine block.

BINGO!  Better safe than sorry, Dave!

Hint:  Common knowledge here:  Carry a qt of your chosen engine oil in your saddlebag.  Dugh Huh!  :)
