Fuel Injection
« on: July 06, 2008, 10:03:45 PM »

I've had a few problems with the idle on my scooter.....and have been picking up bits and pieces of detail about the Marelli injectors that were standard on an '01 SERG. I'm going to need to address the situation...but am hesitant to take it to the local dealer.....I just have little confidence they will actually try to fix it or even offer a reasonable solution.

If the idle has been adjusted....and it still wants to die sometimes....what suggestions do you guys have for a solution? Is there a replacement injection system out there that can be substituted? I'm not very technical about the mechanics of my bike....but from reading on this site, I know a lot of you guys are.

If you were going to "fix" the problem....what would you do?

Thanks,

Mike

There are conversion options from Marelli to either a carb or to Delphi.  Always interested in the simplest solutions first though check out one thing.  Even though it will require a visit to the dealership it is worth checking.

The Marelli bikes had a "wandering idle" problem for quite awhile.  There was a service bulletin directing an ECM flash update that did a good job of solving the problem.  If yours is just an at idle problem of some variance in RPM it's worth having them plug it in to see if it's been done.

Just an opinion, with no first person experience to back it up, but if it were mine I would first try to get the M-M fixed.  It can be done.  As 2lane suggested, make sure the latest ECM flash was done.  Then verify the intake is leak free, adjust the cold and hot idle as per the manual, and you should be good.

MDC,

I have a 01 and did the Delphi conversion. Couldn't seem to get the M&M to idle. Dealer was able to fix either the cold idle or the hot idle, but not both. Also had lots of decel popping. Tried a PC with no luck.
The conversion cleared these issues and I have a strong running reliable ride. Found all the required parts on Ebay.

I have an '01 and went with the Zippers Kit with Auto-Tune. Now that Zippers has worked out the bugs, it's been a pleasure to ride. Back when it was M&M I had all those problems too. Having been through all that I have, my advice is unless you WANT an FI system, go carb. It's cheaper, easier, and ANYONE can work on it.

CVOGEO...any chance you could help me with "what" parts to look for on ebay? We can take this off line...I did a search of delphi and got hundreds of hits. Then searched road glide & delphi and got over 600 hits. Just not sure what exactly I need to try and find.

Thanks

Definitely don't take it offline.  Never know when later that someone else might need the same information.

I'm sure it will be a good tune. Getting a good tune was never an issue for me, in fact I had some great ones with the Power Commander and SERT. The problem was that all the M&M issues kept cropping up post tune. I'd get it tuned and it would run great for a while, then start acting up. That proved to be too much for me. So I went Zippers.

If you were going to "fix" the problem....what would you do?

I went to carb with HEADPAN62's help. The best thing I've done to this bike yet. 42MPG at 80-85MPH and 46-47MPG at 70ish. No hiccups burps or farts. Had I known it was that easy to change I would have done it in 01! :2vrolijk_21:

Sure. And for Don, we won’t go off line!  ;D
Here is a list along with some info about the conversion
First some shortcuts:
Thayer Sales offers a fuel line that allows you to use the existing fuel pump and dual lines. They also offer a custom wiring harness. These cost $$$$$ but make the job easier. I chose to switch the fuel pump and made my own harness.

Here is a list of items that are from a 2002 - 2006 injected model

Delphi ECM (recommend getting the matching TSSM as it is "married" to the ECM. Dealer can marry the two if you use your old one)
Throttle body, injectors, intake manifold, and all modules; IAC, MAP, TPS, IAT (These all mount to the TB assembly)
Coil, coil mount, and plug wires (Delphi senses engine knock through the coil, M&M did not)
Fuel pump assembly if you do not use the Thayer line
I lucked out and found on EBay a complete Delphi FI system off of a wrecked 03 Soft tail. Then found a fuel pump assembly on EBay. The coil, mount, and wires were bought new.
I purchased a manual for the 03 and then using the 01 manual created a schematic of the wiring harness. Then I modified the 03 Soft Tail harness to work. This was the more difficult part and took the longest. Don't want any mistakes!!
Once the harness was complete and all parts were on the bench, the actual conversion was less than a day's work. You should know if the ECM and TSSM are not from the same bike, the converted bike will not start (trailer to the dealer). This is the function of the TSSM; security. As I had a married set, mine ran. Because the ECM was not from a Screaming Eagle, it did not have the correct map. Rode it to the dealer and we connected to their HD computer.

Now here is another snag; the HD software requires the VIN number to connect. However our VIN is for an M&M system (no Delphi maps). The dealer was able to view the Delphi ECM and its VIN from the donor bike. Closing the program and then restarting allowed use of the Delphi VIN. Be care about where you buy the ECM, if it is stolen, the HD software will not allow any changes. Mine was good and then allowed us to select the stage two download.
Hope this helps, although I know I must have forgot something. If you get into this and have questions let me know. Enjoyed doing the work and really enjoy the results.
