Saddle Bag Latch Help
« on: June 06, 2005, 11:02:12 AM »

One of the latches on my saddlebags won't stay closed.  It constantly pops open cruising down the road.  I know if I lock it that will keep it from opening, but it am lazy and hate to constantly lock and unlock my saddle bag.  Any ideas how to fix it.

Thanks

There is an adjustment (bending the "fingers") on the latch - I'll try to copy the manual page and post it this evening.  Just be careful and don't overdo it, or you can break them.

That is what I heard.  My dealer mentioned they did that when I picked up the bike.  Unfortunately the dealer is in Carrol, Iowa which is 6 hours from me.

I had the same type of problem after I installed my Saddlebag Lid Spolier Kit.  I could not close my saddlebag without locking it.  When I spoke with a friend at Harley I was told that I needed to check the lock clamp where you attach the saddlebag with the cotterpin locking key.  Harley calls that part "Bailhead Stud".
You need to remove your saddlebag by removing the two cotterpin locking keys on the inside of your saddlebag.  The Bailhead Stud is located on both sides of your seat.  The seat strap is bolted to the Bailhead Stud by a 7/16 bolt.  This part is closes to your fuel tank.  The Bailhead Stud needs to have the open space facing thr rear.  After I loosen the bolt that holds the Bailhead Stud in place, I found that mine was had the opening facing towards the ground.   I adjusted the Bailhead Stud to face the rear.  Retighten the bolt, reattached the saddlebag using the (2) cotterpin locking keys.  When I went to close the saddlebag it closed without any problem and I no longer have to use the key to close my saddlebag.  I hope this helps you - Ride Safe!!  [smiley=helmet.gif]

Mine would not close today after I was waxing under the chrome trim on the lid. Seems the tether strap folded the wrong way and was pinched between the lid and saddlebag. May be something to check, could be it folded the wrong way once and keeps doing it now.

Couldn't find a decent illustration in the manual.  Excuse the quality of the photo, still learning how to use this new camara.

I had this same exact problem with the left bag on mine. I read about adjusting the fingers, but was too lazy to try it so I mentioned it at my 1k mile service and the dealer just replaced the whole latch. I don't know why they didn't try adjusting it, but I'm not bitching since it's fixed.

I used to be lazy too.... and I arrived at my destination once with an open saddlebag.  Believe it or not, it vibrated itself totally open... Due to the wind and exhaust noise I never even heard it.  You should lock em.
