How To Pick Up A Fallen Motorcycle
« on: July 09, 2008, 09:39:03 AM »

Thought about this after reading the “stupid thing I’ve done” thread... many of them seem to have resulted in a fallen motorcycle.

I was on a training course a number of years ago that showed how to pick up a bike off the ground without landing yourself on the couch or in the hospital.

Here’s a links that shows how it’s done!

Whats funny is to see a young lady pick it up effortlessly and a biker guy struggle.

That’s not her... but it’s the same technique minus the skirt! :bananarock:

Skert is pretty well known for teaching this technique. I had learned her technique, and had used it, long before I met her. She's the captain of our 3-Day Breast Cancer walk Route Safety (Moto) Crew. Pretty cool chick and a hard core rider too, doing the Iron Butt rally solo on her 50th birthday.

I don't hold the fact that she's a BMW rider against her. ;)

YUP, thats how you does it.. but with a bager you have a little more leverage as the bike does not drop as far. The saddle bag guards and engine gaurd and even the floor boards keep the bike up about 30 degrees allowing you to get under a bit easier. Still a bit tought though, once she's up you have a little ballancing act to get her on the stand.

Doesn't work all that well in gravel, with loose footing.   Don't ask me how I know....

With a full TP and luggage strapped up top, she'll go all the way over flat without even thinking about stopping on the guards.

that will take you 9 minutes. 3 to unload her, 3 to get her up and 3 to reload her...

The problem lies in the damage that can be done when she don't stop.

Technique doesn't work on ice.  Specially when facing downhill all the way over past the crash bar/saddlebag guard.  Don't ask me how I know that either!  :'(

So, you are saying, in a round-about way, don't ride on ice? :nixweiss: ;D
