bears all over the dragon
« on: July 12, 2008, 03:24:02 PM »

We rode the Cherohala skyway and the dragon on Friday and the bears were thick. Great ride anyway and tickets were somehow avoided. Just had lunch at the Smith House and it was great as always. Headed back up 60 and across Wolf pen gap to finish out the day. Picks to follow!  Great riding down here.

The thread topic almost sounds like a sports page head line, "The Bears were all over the Dragons"

As if traffic, hills, curves, gravel, and traffic cops weren't enough to look out for.......

yep,  black bears.  I was riding up there several years ago and was going at at pretty good rate and a bear walked right out in the middle of the road on me. Needless to say I only left a stripe on the road and not in my shorts.

Did you stop and tell him he needed to stay in his patrol car?

Sure, there's plenty of Black Bears in the woods along the Dragon, but the only ones we saw were of the Tennessee Highway Patrol variety(along with one LEO).  Somehow, we were always lucky enough to pass a considerate rider in the opposite direction warning us of their presence just before we became sitting ducks.  The Cherohala was clear with almost no traffic (in either direction) with significantly more traffic on the Dragon, but never enough to slow us down.  Great that it was a weekday.  Of course, this time of year, the Dragon gets really busy on Saturday and Sunday and it is really best to avoid in favor of other local roads that offer great riding as well.

You usually don't see to many cops on the skyway because they like to use the helicoter for that stretch of road.
