Harley 6 to Baker 7 (Speeds) Tranny Upgrade
« on: July 16, 2008, 09:08:04 AM »

In the latest American Iron mag covers the latest news on the BB7. Some things I like about the new DD7 is the shorter first gear fix for better off-the-line power and the fixed noticeable clunk we all talk about on our HD 6 speeds.

Questions I have about upgrading.

1. Would the warranty not cover my bike should I want to upgrade the tranny to BB7 (07 CVO with extended warranty)

2. I will assume to get better gas milage with the 7th gear (how much?)

3. How will the bike handle the 7th gear on the display (6th green what we currently have)

4. Has anyone had any experience with Baker trannys thay can talk about

5. Cost on this.... Not sure but would like to know

Notes from the mag

GEAR    RATIOS
        HD      Baker
 1     3.34    3.76
 2     2.30    2.75
 3     1.71    2.06
 4     1.41    1.55
 5     1.18    1.27
 6     1.00    1.10
 7               1.00

Warranty for the transmission of course would be shot, but shouldn't affect items outside of that.

Gas mileage would be the same because both are 1:1 in the top gear. I do have a question about increased parasitic drag now that there is more material being driven in the oil bath. Baker should be able to give some insight on this one.

No idea how the indicator would work, I'm quite certain there is no "7" there.

I am interested, especially with the shorter 1st gear.

I think the owners manual or shop manual for my FLHRSE3 says the 6th gear indicator light is activated by the computer. ??? It looks at engine rpm and the bike mph to decide that the trans is in 6th gear, then it turns the light on. You can confirm this just by pulling in the clutch lever and letting the engine idle while rolling down the road in 6th gear -the indicator light will go out. So there is no switch involved to make the light come on.  :) That means the light should still come on when in 7th gear (7th gear? That just sounds weird!  ;D ). But of course, the lighted indicator is still going to say "6"...  8)

I'm kinda interested in that trans too. We usually tow the trailer on long trips, so the lower first gear would be nice. And I think those trannys have quieter (helical cut) gears too?

Seems like it would be cheaper to put a 30 tooth gear on the out put of the trans.

I'm also interested in this transmission (well actually gear set, no complete transmission). I called Baker & it's supposed to be available in August at a cost of 38 or $3900.00. It'll void your MoCo trans warranty, but Baker gives a 5 year 50,000 mile warranty.

Thanks for the update Linny. Still sounds pricey but will wait for someone else to experiment with this first and wait for some results.

Good luck on that one :coolblue:

IMHO Baker is just as bad as the MOCO....nothing they have breaks....something else caused it.....Warranty VOID

I've been lurking here for the past six mohs but your request for someone with Baker experience really got my attention.  I had a 99 Road King and always felt it needed another gear on the highway.  I purchased a Baker six speed and had the Harley dealer install it.  It was terrible!  It worked ok but the gear whine in all gears except fifth was horrible.  I am not talking about a little whine like my 08 ultra in fifth.. I mean it was horrible!   After numerous calls to Bert Baker, he agreed to look at my bike at Sturgis.  He rode it.. and said it was way to loud.  He assured me they were working on a "fix" and he would take care of it.  His actual words were "I gaurantee to make it right".

After NUMEROUS calls to Bert he again assured me that he would make it right with me.. He even said that my phone number was on a post-it on his office door.   That was the last I ever heard from Bert Baker.  Finally last year I saw him working his booth at Sturgis.  I introduced myself again and he sheepishly said he remembered me.  I told him how dissappointed I was that he "forgot" about me and his guarantee to make it right.  His excuse was that his company had grown so much and he had so many employees that he couldn't be expected to come through for me.  So much for talking to the boss.  If the owner of the company won't stand behind his product and his word how could we expect his employees to do so.

Baker did not stand behind his product and did not keep his word to me.  I finally had the Baker crap removed... had them put the Harley 5 speed back in and rode it that way.  It was really fun to hear the Harley rumble again.

Welcome aboard kens! Thanks for the heartfelt review on Baker. I've heard too many of these kinda stories to consider using Baker. I hope I don't have the need to change gearsets, although I'm not convinced this Cruise Drive 6-speed tranny will hold up either. What other solid tranny options are out there for '07/'08's? :nixweiss:

Ken,

Thanks for the detail story on Baker. Looks like I will not be getting one now that you told me you spoke with the owner and that got you no where after 1 year. If an owner can not live up to his product to get you the help you need, no need to get one is his products on my bike. One bad experience with someone will tell lots of other people not to get a Baker product.
