I Hate My SE II's
« on: June 13, 2005, 06:19:18 PM »

They have the most annoying reverberation back to the passenger and rider I have ever heard, I'm putting the stock mufflers back on the bike for now.

I totally agree with you regarding the SE IIs, it runs fine and produces good power (my bike goes in tomorrow to switch over to Rineharts) I just can't stand the popcorn popper sound under acceleration.

You are SO  right.  That is exactly what they sound like.....a "popcorn popper".   The old model didn't have that sound and you could also modify them, but this new model is not as good.  That's a shame, cause for what they cost, they should be a better muffler.  The old ones were.........spyder

get the high performance baffles with those rhineharts - if they don;t have them  - wait for them - don;t forget to change to good full flow air filter system

Jimp, wow, the timing is perfect on this post.  I have been considering what to do exhaust-wise on my bike and these were one of the finalists.  I rode a strong-running 95" Ultra with these mufflers for about 50 miles and in just that short amount of time noticed the reverberation/drone that you speak of.  I wondered then how well that would stand the test of time.

Thanks for posting your opinions on the sound.

It's easy enough to fix, replace the SE II baffles with the Kerker/Mikuni P.A.T. performance baffles.  They drop right in & out perform the Rineharts on a dyno.

If you have the HD SE slip-ons, p/n 65115-98, these are made by Kerker for HD, and Kerker offers two different baffles, both of which are louder/ freer flowing than the baffle in the HD version.

The standard Kerker baffle is the K-3, and the optional baffle is the Mikuni P.A.T. baffle(that is what I am running). Former is 23 inches like HD baffle, but is straight through, the latter is about 13 inches long and straight through also.

The baffle is retained by the three screws that hold on the end tip.

Kerker part numbers are #100-7580 for former, and #100-7857 for the latter. Believe you can buy from your CCI dealer or have Jenni from Benjy's order them for you.

I too tried the se ll's and did not like the sound. I removed the end caps to  see if it helped and they were great. Something to do with the way the pressure wave hits the end cap rim.  Leaving them off was not an option but neither was buying more exhaust parts or any other parts for that matter. Wallet pretty thin after all the "extra's" required to make this bike more enjoyable.
I tack welded a short piece of pipe same diameter as the exhaust outlet onto the baffle not quite long enough to stick out of the end caps and painted them flat black. Sounds alot better, not perfect but a great improvement with that back of the neck thing gone except for under extreme acceleration but nowhere near as bad as before.
Great site! been lurking since I ordered my TWEETY last july and got it 3 weeks ago.
cheers [smiley=beerchug.gif]

Has anyone had the same problem with the other SE mufflers (slash down/ slash up, no end caps)?  I,ve got the slash downs on order (wanted the ones with the endcaps if the SEEG endcaps would have fit - didn't like any of the available endcaps as well as the plain SEEG parts.  Unfortunately, they do not fit).

grc, I have the slash-up one-piece SE mufflers.  I've had the set I have now on two different bikes.  I think they sound fine and the wife does, too.  They have a much higher pitched sound than the SEII's.  Not saying that that's why they're not annoying, just that they don't quite have the deep Harley rumble to them that most folks want.
