Just a rumor.......
« on: June 13, 2005, 10:03:45 PM »

Heard that the CHP has cancelled there contract with BMW and are going back to HD.  Haven't been able to confirm this yet but will get down to Sac HD (that's the delivering dealership for CHP) tomorrow to confirm or deny it.

I know that there are a bunch of local type law enforcement outfits (city, county, other states, etc) that follow the CHP, rather than spending the money, time and energy setting up their own specs, testing, etc.  I read that that is due to the fact that CHP has a larger contingency on two wheels than any other law enforcement agency in the world.

There's a car and bike show once a year, at the CHP Academy and they put on quite a display.  One act, the guy comes riding his bike by the grandstand, sitting side saddle with legs crossed, cup of coffee in one hand (empty cup, of course) and a hard map in the other (representing the newspaper).  That's one riding academy that I'd love to be able to attend.

O.K. rumor is confirmed!  Stopped by Harley Davidson of Sacramento awhile ago........the CHP has cancelled their contract with BMW early with several hundred bikes that were still supposed to be delivered.....that were also cancelled.

It's "officially" still in the bidding process.  One of the "spec.s" that are called for are ABS brake system.  With BMW out of the running, that only leaves HD and one of the Honda models (I was told which model, but don't rememer).  Anyway, our shop foreman has spent the better part of the last month out at the CHP academy working with them on this bid.  One of the things for all to consider is CHP's equipment is old and would be transferred to the new model bikes so mounting hardware will have to be improvised, etc.  Also, the run flat, tires (they can be driven on at highway speeds when totally flat)......I want those!

This will be a good thing for HD and for us as consumers.  Personally, I think it keeps HD on the cutting edge of technology......or at least in the same game.  Like ABS brakes, for instance.  They have it now, but it's a huge system and I think they know that they'll have to get that system down to a much smaller system if they're to stay in the game.

I'll tell you what though...watching two of those BMWs whizz past you on I-80 at Madison is truly a sight!

We're talking tight formation at close to 100.

I actually considered hitting the Oakland PD police auction to pick up a basket case to rebuild for a while.

PS.. I liked Folsom HD more....the ride was worth it alone. 'course I was doing it on a CX500 Custom...which looked great parked in their lot while I kicked tires, and checked availability.

We did give away an Ann. Fat Boy when I worked out there...think we got it from Sac HD.

CHIT. you should watch Chip and SE06 and the whole Soggy Valley gang at over 100 in close formation...not to mention Tater and Chip, Tater-Chip, I still chuckle.

I'm not kidding, at one point in NC I was doin' 115-118 to TRY to catch up to them.

Yeah...see I never see 100 on my bike.

Something to do with the combination of stock EVO and my 270lb fat ass!

I did enjoy many 100+ rides on a VTX1800. If you're gonna buy metric...that is the mother of a bike!

Those CHP BMWs look like they have throttle forever though. Quiet...smooth...fast.

Who really wants that anyway?
