Help me decide about a repair dilemma
« on: July 25, 2008, 04:25:33 PM »

My bike has been having what I thought was starter issues. Or as someone else pointed out perhaps auto compression release problems. It seemed to be getting worse and I was going to be out of town so I brought it to my local dealer. They  upon hearing the same noise and my authorization opened the primary and see no damage to the gears starter or otherwise - no metal residue in the primary fluid.... So being a good customer they tell me they have received the letter from Harley about "recalls" that will most likely affect my bike. So they are waiting to hear from Harley if they can do that work now... and if it is related to my current problem. Well perhaps I should say "problem".  So here is the rest of the story and the dilemma: I talked to the asst. mngr. in service and told him I had a trip planned for next Tue. and knew that even if Harley agreed to the warranty/recall work it would be after Tue. before I got my bike back. So the next logical question was could they put the bike back together and I just ride and wait for the recalls or whatever they are calling it in August.... Sure, they say... but it will cost you $200. On the one hand I understand, they have to be paid for their time spent looking into what was going on. On the other hand why should I have to pay when I am still with in the 1st year of the warranty and have six more coming. However, .... they are not finding anything wrong, but they are also not saying there is nothing wrong.... I am thinking about offering to pay $100 and move on.... but then what about the horrible noise that I get (only intermittently) when I am starting up a $30K motorcycle[:@][:@][:@] what would you do????

Trade it or put a deposit on a 2009 CVO, put it back together and ride it till the new one comes in.

There should be another option.  Tell them to look until they fix it.

There is a problem.  You heard and apparently they did too.  Enough to tear it down once.  It's under warranty.  They are obligated to fix it.

If they say they can't or won't tell them, "that's fine, just be a good sport and sign this absolute acceptance of all present and future liabilities for any loss, injury or death that might come to me or my property as a result of you instructing me to ride my bike with a problem."

It does not matter how nicely they are saying it.  If they are telling you to bend over ask them for the KY.

What 2LBR said.   :2vrolijk_21:

And no way would I pay them $200 or $100 or $1.  Bike is IN WARRANTY.  There is a problem.  That is not your expense, that is THEIR expense.  If the Service Mrgr. sez no, speak to the GM & if he sez no speak to the owner & if he sez no, call Milwaukee & explain your problem - calmly.  They can find it if they look for it - maybe need another tech to review the problem/symptoms.

iski & 2LBR, your thoughts were my 1st thoughts.... I have a spent a lot of $$ to buy this bike and insurance against this very problem, extended warranty, so why should I have to pay a dime.... there is something wrong and needs to be fixed!! I also understand that Harley is going to only pay them to do this once.... so I guess I understand why the dealer would like to me to pay them... but it really should not be my problem. I also really want to go on a three day ride as I ad planned before the end of my summer vacation.............. >:(

The dealer makes profit on the bike along with the Motor Company.  The responsibility belongs to them both.  It has to be made clear in such a circumstance that you could absolutely care less how they sort it out between themselves.  But someone is responsible for finding and fixing a recognized problem.

BBH - Not sure how far you have traveled up the food chain on this issue?  Dealer here has sped up stuff for me when trips were on the horizon & did it at their expense.  Seriously, if you have spoken to the owner & told you gotta pay, I would talk to Milwaukee & let them know what the situation is & how you need it resolved.  Maybe a dealer loaner bike would work?

May not be the solution you want at the moment, but have you suggested/they offered you a loaner bike so you can still make your trip?
