J&M Short Antennas Rust in Half
« on: July 25, 2008, 10:08:41 PM »

Just checked my J&M short antennas after a friend said he could hardly hear my cb.
They have been on the bike for a year now.
When iI raised the rubber cover over the spring I found the spring on both were almost rusted into.
There is grounding wire that runs through the center of the spring that was completly rusted in half.
I put my Harley whips back on and restored my cb.....Guess the experiment is over now.....

Interesting.  I've had mine one for almost two years now and no problems with them at all.   :nixweiss:

Slide the rubber up that covers the spring. This is where I found the problem with mine.

The spring has lost its sprung. Guess from the corrosion. The cable inside the spring is rusted in two pieces.
I went back to the stock whips and my radio works again. Guess the should have used stainless.

I wonder if they will cover it under warranty. They can't be that old?

I would certainly hope so.  They have a two year warranty, and I believe David said they were only one year old.

There have been many complaints before about the set screws rusting on these antennas (within weeks). No response (that I can recall) from Jim. We should all expect better though....  >:(

Jim ( & his company) has been pretty good to deal with in the past. I'd be surprised if he doesn't stand behind these.

Changed mine out on Run For The Wall, people couldn't hear me, went back to long whip , problem solved...Greg

Living in a dry heat climate of Arizona we don't run into that rust problem. Now I know why I moved from Virginia to Arizona!!!!!!!!! :huepfenjump3:

I tried one of those and found the reception awful. HD makes a shorty that seems good. Try one.
