plug wires
« on: July 26, 2008, 07:54:01 PM »

Whats involved to change the spark plug wires on a 08 UC ?

I can see the coil pack but the wires are held in with some clips and I can't see all of the clips or even follow the wires the whole way and more importantly I can't get my hands up in there.

Looks like the gas tank has to come off or at least raised up out of the way.

Any one got any super secret ways of changing the wires ?

Thx

DD

If it's like the '04's if you have small hands you may be able to get to them by taking the rear of the tank loose and loosening the front so you can raise it enough (once raised you will want to support it up w/something) to get your hand under there to unplug them from the coil. My problem was my hand was to large, and I'm to anal not to have the wires go back into the clips like they came from the factory. So the only way I would've been able to do it is take the tank all the way off...... I've still got orange plug wires to put on my :pumpkin: :(

I was wanting to replace my plug wires with SE's om my 06 CUSE,  My dealer told me that in doing so it would set a code in the Ecm and cause the engine light to come on ??? What wires are you wanting to install and why ? Cosmetic change ? Feedback Please

I'm running red SE's on the cherry and orange SE's on the pumpkin.  Loosen the tank and raise it, and use a pair of needlenose pliers to put them on.  You will feel/hear a "click" when they are on correctly.

Don't know this for a fact.  So take it as only anecdotal without citation of any kind.  But have been told that there are some plug wires on the market that will alter or completely lose the effect of the ion sensor.

Haven't done the wires yet but I did change the spark plugs to the SE multi tip type and the first time I tried to start the cycle with the new plugs it took an extra long time to fire up. Maybe the ECM had to relearn something to do with the ion sensor, not sure.

But it's fired right up each time after that delayed first one.

I'll see what happens with the wires, maybe this weekend, but it's supposed to be sunny and hot so maybe I'll be out riding instead  :pepper:

I put screamin eagle plug wires on mine after checking the resistance. The readings fell in at 5.2K ohms which is on the low side of the acceptable range.
When I checked the old ones the resistance would raise to near infinity while bending them slightly which told me that they were possible failing.

Bike seems to run better, just need to check the fuel filter system and lines now.

Hate it when that happens...    ;)
