Marbles
« on: July 27, 2008, 10:52:46 AM »

Hello to all. I've been reading here for awhile, and hope some one can offer advice. Purchased an 07 SERK with SERT and V&H slip on in the spring of 07. Early on I noticed a rattle, kind of like a few marbles getting shaken in a glass. Rattle starts at about 2800 through 3800. The dealer machined the rocker boxes for valve spring clearance and installed new compression releases and re-tuned the SERT in the fall of 07.
While in Florida last winter had the 5000 mi service compleated at a dealership there. I asked the tech to listen on the check out ride, and he confirmed that I'm not hallucinating and there is a rattle. The service manager advised me about the crank issues and that I should have the run out checked.
Back home this spring my dealer checked the run out and the valve train and found it all OK. They installed a tune update and dynoed. My service manager asked me to concider another brand oil and or thicker oil to hush the noise. The rattle has gotten a little louder as the miles roll on this summer.
The good news is I have not had leaks!!!
Hope you have some ideas.  Thanks

Simple things first, check the top motor mount. specifically the stabilizer link bolts. I have had similiar sounds with these loose. Also be sure the gas tank is tight.

That's Mobil 1 times five quarts.  He must use it in the primary too :confused5: .

I don't know.  Been passing a kidney stone all weekend.  I'm making stuff up and seeing things at this point.  Good meds may not make it feel better, but they can make you not care part of the time.

Another gentleman recently had a similar issue that he eventually traced to the O2 sensor rattling at certain rpm's.  If I can find the post I'll add a link to it later.

Jerry

OK, here you go.  Worth a look see, could be you have the same issue.

My Serk for a HD anyway is as smooth as one could hope for. The only time mine got buzzy was when a front motor mount broke.

I have the same rattle about 28-2900rpm's. I seem to hear it as each gear gets to that area then goes away either below that or above that. Anyway dropping of at the dealer this morning as the volt meter dropped down then back and forth to 12 volts but made it home last ride. The battery light and the engine light came on first then went out after a short time now only comes up to 12 volt and engine light comes on and stays for a bit before going out. I'll report back.

My friend and I both own CVO SE 07 Ultras.

They both sound like they are going to blow up at any moment.  Knock & rattle exactly as you describe.  I use Amsoil but I have tried Moble 1 V twin, Torca 50 and 60 weight non synthetics.  Nothing makes it quiet.   :nixweiss:

Only 80 temp oil makes it quiet, but as soon as she warms up the aggravating noise is back.  10,000 miles and it's about the same as when I bought it.  Got the rear cyl leak around 8500 mile or so.

Mine did the same thing and it was the motor mount so you might want them to check that since it's going in the shop anyway
