Doorman,

You have not to far from you T-Man, and a little south you have Cycle Rama, but your 2500 dollars isnt going to cover much if you send out the heads for their porting or cams.

Not sure I would go with a gear drive in an 07 due to the crank run outs, unless your going to dig deeper into your pocket.

I agree with HD-Dude and would suggest calling one of the guys above or cross the country to Dan Baisley or Dave Mackey those are 4 good named people that will do the job right.   The rest is up to you and your wallet.   Most of the better porters are going to be from 900 - 1500 dollars or more for the porting etc.    These guys will get you an entire package that will run along with their heads that should give you what you are looking for.

If your not going to dig deeper, the suggestion would be new lifters, hd 110 pistons 10.5 to 1, horsepower inc 55 or 58 throttlebody in prep for headwork later, HD 251 cam and adjustable pushrods / tubes  (S&S).   Then you have labor, SERT, Tune and pipes.

it's an 08'. I don't know if that would make any difference on the crank runouts.

That sounds like a better route to go for now, and do the head porting after my billfold recovers.........I already have the pipes and the SERT..

From what I've been reading, the gear drive cams wouldn't be a good option when the chain is more reliable than they have been in the past.

I could double the budget if I need to...... $5k

I want to thank everybody who stopped by, and guided me in the right direction on this winter project.......Wes at Cycle Rama has put together a package on what I was looking for.  I asked him to quote the engine mods to where I wanted all the horsepower and torque I could get, without touching the displacement, and still run pump gas and have the reliability..

As for the budget, well it's not double, but it's way over........Pretty much like everything else I do.

Ride safe,

Joey

Joey,

Glad you got it all worked out, look forward to hearing how your winter project goes.   I hope you get the work done late in the season so you wont have to go out to the garage like some and just heat cycle it till the thaw comes :)

this project might start soon as the middle of september..........i need to go by the dealership and talk more about it and check the crank runout......if it's good from there, we'll start it in september......the bike is a black version of the 08 cvo springer......with the rinehart crossbacks flush with chrome mufflers....

still trying to get a labor price from the dealership.......the first labor price didn't include checking the runout........dude was out yesterday and i'm gonna check back sometime today ...... if the runout is beyond the tolerance that we want to see, what is the best way to fix it....... i'm not sure what harley's specs are on this, and i'm sure if it's out to much it might be covered under warranty..

i'm just trying to dot my i's and t's on this project and get an idea on the worst case scenario.

once the cam chest is opened checking the runout is not more than a 20 minute job. HD allows for up tp .010" runout which is way too much. .003"-.004" should be the max.

I hope you know you'll be adding a bundle to fix that one! You need to disassemble the cases and either replace the flywheel assembly, or send yours out to be welded trued and balanced for no runout. You should also do the Timken brearing conversion while it's apart. Now you're building an entire engine if ya go that route. And you can buy a new Jim's 120 for less than the cost of doing all that work, and keep your original motor too. Just making sure you know what you're getting into. ;)

do all the 110's have issues with the crank runouts?.......sounds like this could be a crap shoot on doing this mod and finding out about the runout is not within the spec we want.....

The original spec, and it's in my SERK3 Service Manual Supplement, is 0.0"-0.003". That was subsequently changed to 0.010". And now it was just documented in the '09 MY Tech Changes, that it was changed again to 0.013"! That's without any changes to the crank assembly that we know of. I'd sure be checking runout before I thought of going gear drive. And it's not just the 110's. That's all current TC's. If the runout's within their specs, and you're OK with 0.013" runout, then stay with the hydraulic tensioners. ;)
