110 winter mods?
« on: July 27, 2008, 10:11:11 PM »

I'm reseaching and need some advice on a winter time project.... I have a 2008 SE springer (fxstsse2) with rinehart crossback and SE super tuner...

what do you all think about ported heads (16953-08), pistons (22502-07), and some kind of gear driven cam in the mid to high range rpm.........

thanks,
Joey

What is in the budget for this build?
Do you care about warranty?

In my opinion you can do better having your heads worked and picking a piston and cam combo that plays well with the head work. You will do much better looking at the complete build then trying to pick bolt on parts out of the catalog.

If you want to keep the warranty on the engine then forget about any changes. Most Dealers will not cover engine failures once you go inside, even with parts from HD.

I can understand the warranty once you go inside the motor.......... With the warranty out the window, what do you think about the project inside the budget.?

Are you doing the work or having it done?

The biggest bang for your buck would be a cam swap. For the 110's the wood W7 will bolt right in and works very well. Use adjustable pushrods (cut the ld ones out) IF (or when) you end up with the dreaded head gasket leak the dealer should still cover it as you will have not removed your heads. You can keep the hydro tensioners and save on the gear set (about $400).

Looks like it might go over the budget.

I think everything I do is over budget......I was thinking that buying a set of ported heads would be quicker than having the mechanic pull the existing heads and send them off to be ported and reworked and sent back....... basically a higher CR pistons and rework the top end........ Who do I need to call?

What part of the country are you in?

A good porter will do much better than the bolt on offerings from the moco. And the price should be about the same.

Whenever I budget out the mods I never want to go over $4000.00 to $10,000.00  ;D

Dealership has got a mechanic that can do the work. He can pull the heads and I'll ship to whomever to do the porting.  I was hoping that whoever does the port job can also supply the recommended cam, pistons, and all the necessary parts to complete the rebuild.

Just trying to get a since of direction to where I'm wanting to go with this project.
