Seat Security
« on: June 15, 2005, 10:58:03 AM »

I have seen many threads on this site concerning someone making off with a high end custom seat.  I hopefully will be putting my Corbin on in a few weeks, (assuming they get it right, see the topic on "Corbin seat issues".  I have been considering a few options.  If I put the locking bracket on the tourpack, it makes it very rough to reach the screw for the seat, and I am working on the premise that thieves want to get it and run thieves want to get it and run thieves want to get it and run thieves want to get it and run thieves want to get it and run thieves want to get it and run thieves want to get it and run thieves want to get it and run thieves want to get it and run thieves want to get it and run thieves want to get it and run thieves want to get it and run thieves want to get it and run thieves want to get it and run in seconds, not minutes seconds, not minutes seconds, not minutes seconds, not minutes seconds, not minutes seconds, not minutes seconds, not minutes seconds, not minutes seconds, not minutes seconds, not minutes seconds, not minutes seconds, not minutes seconds, not minutes seconds, not minutes .  The other option when I don't have the tour pac on, is the quick release pin that you can order from any of the cycle rags.  It goes in where the screw would anchor, but in this case I would use the red Locktite  or JB Weld, to fix it in the threaded hole.  Then your seat tab slips over this pin, and you insert their stud that holds the seat in place.  I would substitute the stud with a small lock, only when parked, so there is no chance of the lock damaging paint.
With the cost of these custom seats, ($1500 in my case) a little security may go a long way.

Has anyone come up with other solutions?    If you have, how about sharing it with all of us.

Striker,

Do you tend to repeat yourself often???????Your post made my eyes go funny....... [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I'd keep my insurance deductible's low and not worry about it. I've never had a seat stolen and all I've run is Corbin's or Lepera's for the past 10 years. I do try to be consious of where I park it when its not in sight for long periods of time. But I've been to Sturgis, Laconia, Daytona etc.... multiple times and never an issue. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

If someone wants its bad enough they will get it one way or another. I'd be more concerned that someone would steal the whole bike........ [smiley=cry2.gif]

Remember "you" may need to get under that seat at some point so whatever you end up doing I'd keep it simple. I would recommend using either a vortex screw or allen head screw and keep a tool to fit it somewhere on the bike. Maybe one of those reverse screws like they use to assemble public bathroom stalls would do the trick to slow someone down or cause them to just move on........ [smiley=confused5.gif]

Good luck!

Did not know seats where that expensive mmm.... where did you say you parked your bike? Why not try one of the bike security systems that has proximity detection? They go off when somone gets a few feet away from the bike. Think Scorpion makes one that is HD compatible.

I just changed the screw out from the fancy chromed thumb screw to the regular one and put a little loctite on it, I have a grey ostrich corbin, and I'm not going to fret too much as I have the stock seat put away and Insurance will cover it.

I bought the Kuryekin (sp) seat screws, you get two in the pack, so they are a good deal.  I put blue loctite on it, and tonight when I wanted to remove the seat I had to use my leatherman to take it off.  Not quite what I anticipated.

Striker it might be good to heed the lesson that Mobe unfortunately recently learned and shared.  Be very careful with loctite around the leather.  Apparently that stuff will immediately and completely bleach the color of any area of the seat it touches.
