Motorcyclist Killed in Crash With Runaway Amish Buggy

MEADVILLE, Pa. —  A motorcylist is dead after an accident with a Amish buggy in northwestern Pennsylvania.

Police say a group of Amish people fishing at Pymatuning State Park had their horse tied up on Friday night. But the horse broke loose and pulled the buggy onto Route 6 east of Linesville, in Crawford County. The unlighted buggy collided with a motorcycle operated by 42-year-old Duane Forsythe of Beaver Falls.

Forsythe was killed. His passenger, 44-year-old Catherine Fosnaught, also of Beaver Falls, was injured. The horse wasn't hurt.

The Amish have a large presence in my area.  It's hazardous even when they're being driven by a person, not running loose.  Frequently I've come around corners and found cars who can't wait passing them around a turn over a solid yellow line, or come hard into a corner and found some extra slippery "mud" the horses have left behind.  You learn to anticipate them abit and have to really back it down in some areas just in-case... But none of that would help if you come accross one in the middle of the road at night without the lanterns lit.  Poor guy...

We got good at dodging them in York in April.  They were EVERYWHERE.  I'm surprised the motorcycle operator didn't see the required orange triangle on the buggy unless the rear wasn't in view at the angle he was seeing it.  What more do we have to look out for now?

Up here in Southern Ontario I live in the heart of Mennonite country. There are at least 5 collisions yearly in my area alone involving these buggys. I don't know what is worse, the deer or the buggys. THE MUFFMAN

It doesn't seem that this rider had anything to do with the accident other than being the victim. God bless his family and I hope they'll be okay.

Horses and motorcycles are a bad mix. I remember riding into Trinidad CO. with about 500 bikes on Run for the Wall. Someone rode their horse to watch us parade through town. The horse got spooked, threw it's rider, and started to run. It was trapped with all the buildings in the downtown area so it was just running through the pack from one side of the street to the other. No one got hurt that I know of but several riders went down. It was pretty scary watching it close in on you in your mirror and not have anywhere to go.

Terrible accident. Apparently the ride hit the buggy and not the horse. Wonder if they (Amish) are required to carry liability insurance since they operate on public roads, etc.?  :nixweiss:

Horsepower is how fast you hit a wall.Torque is how far you will take the wall with you.

In some areas the orange triangle is a "devil's sign" and the bishop forbids them to be attached.

Very freak accident indeed. Do the Omish have to carry insurance to run the buggies on the streets or are they exempt. :nixweiss: Always had a lot of respect and rode easy when passing them, not to spook the horses.
