Finally Done
« on: July 28, 2008, 02:06:50 PM »

Completed my cam change in my '05 SEEG with very good results.  Went with the Zippers 575, S&S gear drive and (following suggestions) the Feuling oil pump and lifters.

Bike rides MUCH better, tons of low end and an eye blurring pull from 3K on up.  Went with the stock head pipes and the SE 98B slip-ons - just felt better down low.

Dyno numbers (with SERT) were 115 torque (100 @ 2600) and 95 HP.  My butt tells me the bike runs strong.

For those who have some time on this build:  It seems a bit noisy - I'm guessing the combination gear drive and high lift cam?

I am also having a heck of a time adjusting the pushrods (different noise).  Feuling says .090 to .100 range - anybody find the "best" (more or less) compromise to this and the best method of ensuring zero lash for adjustment?

Thanks to all for their guidance -  it runs just the way I want it to.

Good to hear you're happy with the build. I'm planning on eventually doing a similar build with my '03 SERK and those numbers certainly are encouraging. One thing I've been concerned about is the noise, though. How would you describe it? Is it obnoxious or just noticeable?

The gear noise is a little more than with my RK which has Andrews 26G's.  I would expect this to be as the Zippers are a higher lift and steeper ramp.  Checked my pushrods tonight and found a cracked nut on the rear exhaust pushrod.  They were also too tight.  The Dyno guy "adjusted" them and I'm hoping that was the problem.  Now I just have to find a new locknut for the pushrod..........

If your '03 SERK has the same 103" as my '05 SEEG, you will sure like the 575 cam.

What pushrods did you use? The SE rods are typically 2.5 turns from zero lash and the S&S, Andrew are typically 4 turns. I have noticed that the 575 cams are a bit noisy. The YB13 cam from Yuill Bros is a bit quiter but comes on a few hundred RPM later than the 575. It does carry our further as well.

Seeing this made me curious.  Jim, do you know if this spec is the same for newer SE pushrods as well?

Yes;
I have done 6 or so sets of these, I really like them, the tapered ends don't rub on the tubes with the high lift cams :2vrolijk_21:

That's good to know.  While I temporarily misplaced a good set of adjustables last winter I got a set of the "old" SE adjustables.  Just because they were handy in town and I wanted to get done.  Found the others later but while they are adjustable they're aren't quick install.  And I've just never had the initiative some Saturday to make the swap back.

Not a big fan of the prior version of the SE pushrods though. Have had them bend twice in years past.  If these are a truly superior part I could justify that on a rainy Saturday some day.

Most of them have been with bolt in cams but I have two 107" builds with .625" lift cams in progress at the shop now that I am using them in. The first will fire up tomorrow. Looks wise I would say they are much better. Will know more after the break in's and dyno.....

I used the new SE pushrods.  They are 24 tpi which according to Feuling means 2 1/4 turns are .095".  The guy at Feuling was very helpful on adjusting them so I went back to the beginning when I found the cracked nut.  They had been tightened during the dyno runs and were about 2 3/4 turns which put them too long for Feuling specs.

My plan is to run them at 2 1/4 turns and go from there (probably back them to 2 turns if not satisfied) to get them right.
