ISO Grips.
« on: July 30, 2008, 07:18:47 AM »

Anyone out ther have some good tips on changing out the grips?  I'm changing them the stock style to some ISO grips from Kuryakyn.  Seems pretty straight forward, but I have never dealt with radio switches before.  Anything I need to look out for?  How about getting the left grip off?  Any info is appreciated.   Thanks   Scot

You will have to remove the screws for the switch housings but other than that they will just hang there.  The left grip can be cut and peeled off then sanded to get the glue off.  Right side, loosen the throttle cables and then remove cables.  Be careful not to lose the brass retainer end caps.  Should be fairly simple!.

The manual mentioned something about a piece of cardboard between the brake lever and sensor so as not to break the sensor?  I'm getting ready to add the Heat Demons and change out the grips with the ISO's on the wild1 bars.  The fixmyhog DVD has alot of good info.  Cheers.

Yep, forgot about that little tidbit.  I believe it calls for 1/8".  You need to disengage the brake light switch otherwise you break off the tip when putting it back together.

Am I the only one that just watches what they're doing and what position the lever is in and has never had to do that?  Never messed with it and never had anything break yet.

There is a small plastic nipple (brake light switch) that the brake lever dis-engauges when pressed. It is really easy to snap it off. Placing a piece of cardboard or something else just ensures that you won't break it. It is a really good practice to do when working on the housings.

Also on newer bike the left grip is not glued on. It is held in place by the switch housing. The left iso grip does need to be glued on. Clean the bar and the inside of the grip very well before applying the glue. DO NOT ride the bike several hours (over night is best) to alow the glue to set fully.

Have read that warning for years Jim.  Yet have never once done it.  Fortunately never snapped anything off.  Always hold the lever partially depressed (it's a "feel" thing) going on or off and just never had a problem.  Now wait and see.  After bragging about it once I'll break the next one...

You've just jinxed yourself :huepfenlol2:....I have only broken one myself but I cannot tell you how many times customers bring the bikes in after doing something with the controls and wondering why the brake light stays on

Is there any way grips can come off without destroying them in the process?

I'm actually thinking more about the V-rod in the context of this question but ya never know, might get to swapping around on the SERK someday too

If they are glued on it's a crap shoot.  Depends on how easily the glue turns loose.  I always grab hold with both hands and twist.  Sometimes they break loose cleanly.  Sometimes they don't.

I noticed my stock grips on the left side wasn't glued on (wild1 bars). Looks like the ISO grips requires glue.

Any preference on position of the rubber ribs when installing the left side?

I'm in the process of installing the 1.25 heat demons and ISO grips.

Thanks!

Answered my own question, Kuryakyn had a picture of the left grip.

2005 was the first year they weren't glued on.  They were for many many years prior though.  So much of the aftermarket kept building to the larger fitment group.

Have tried ISOs a couple of times with no glue or just a tiny dab.  Thinking they'll have to be back off someday for some reason.  Never worked.  Some rainy (or other day) I'd notice they turned or walked outboard.  Sometimes a little dab won't do you.

Yeah, you can insert an air nozzle between the handlebar & the grip & blow it off.

Sometimes works great - worth a try.
