Man do these things run hot on 95 degree days!

I did 300 miles yesterday in 90-97 degree weather. When stuck in traffic I could not drive the bike without it pinging – any gear – any speed. Even rolling on the throttle in 5th at 70 mph produced a quick ping. I’m using Sunoco high test whenever possible.
I also experienced all 3 of the ECM’s program to try and cool down the engine, with the cylinder shut down being the most noticeable.

Sitting in traffic with no breeze feels like your sitting on the stove.
The pinging concerns me and I’m going to have it checked next week along with a few other items.

without much more info and I appologize for not looking to view if you had any modifications performed - but I am going to take it as there is not - it is running lean from stock - these things run on fumes they are set so lean - if you plan to do nothing on engine/exhaust mods keep an eye on getting stuck where that thing will overheat - you should see that engine in dignostics in research - aluminum gets 30 times its own size when HOT - they are all distorted and everything is designed to flucuate and move with each other - but there is a point where that no longer happens and to put it mildly - it is an engine killer - I take the shoulder when traffic is backed up - or just pull off to the side and wait a few minutes if possible - just avoid excessive idle/lugging - remember AIR COOLED ENGINE - NO AIR FLOW - TROUBLE

The bike is still stock. It goes in for its "late" 1st service on Monday. I have about 2500 miles on it (oil changed to Mobil 1 at 1000) and have been waiting for the 1st service before any mods. I want the shop to run the bike in its “quiet mode” to make sure everything sounds ok. My last bike was a 1982 Low Rider, so this bike has a few different sounds.

After the service the bike gets the air cleaner and V&H ovals with dual head pipes. I have the HD Race Tuner for the bike but my dealer does not have a dyno, so I will be using the race tuner myself, starting with the SE download and road testing with the laptop hooked up.
Yesterday I went on “Gooche’s Garlic Run”, a big fund raising ride into NYC. Slow going through the tunnel that has NO AIR flow, that was a little warm to say the least.

A few years back, after being stuck in Sturgis traffic for several hours, I experience the excess heat and loud pinging you are talking about [smiley=ears.gif].  I thought the motor was going into meltdown mode.    [smiley=sweatdrop.gif]

Certainly, these larger displacement engines will generate more heat.  With little or no airflow past the cylinders, no octane level will be enough.  My only suggestions are shut down if you can when in these situations.  When rolling again, try to roll on the throttle very gingerly until you get airflow again to cool the motor down......and last and certainly not least......USE SYNTHETIC ENGINE OIL. The bike is loaded with synthetic, Mobil 1 and Redline.
The ping happens almost anytime once the air temp hits the 90's, even running down the highway.

Porthole, just for comparison's sake when you talk to your dealer, the red bike here has shown no such misbehavior so far.  Have had it out in mid 90s days a few times now and have none of the pinging you're describing.  Coming back from Illinois a couple of weekends ago I was on I-44 in about a 6 or 7 mile stretch that was closed down to single lanes for construction.  Took about 30 minutes to do that six or seven miles and it was about 90 that afternoon.  The bike didn't get any hotter than I expected it to and never got warm enough to initiate the kill-a-cylinder-mode.  When the traffic began to clear or when you'd have to climb a grade slowly it also never pinged.  Good luck  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I've rode mine in 100+ days and I've not had that problem however, I do have the high flow air cleaner, race tuner and exhaust and my bike is "dyno tuned" so I know that it's flowing max. air through the motor, compared to stock.

Got the bike back from the dealer Friday, in for the first service, they found no issues with the engine heat, engine ping, what I perceive to be bottom end noise (new motor to me)

Friday night I changed the air cleaner to the stage 1 with the CVO Fatboy cover, V&H true dual headers and V&H Dresser ovals. Ran the Race Tuner program.

Did 300 miles this past Saturday, mostly 95 degrees.

I would say the oil temp is now 20-25 degrees cooler! And when it does heat up in traffic it now actually comes down once I get moving again.

Not to mention that the bike runs fantastic now.

Before I did the work I hooked up a laptop and ran the bike easy and hard, recording the data. Actually it was the first time the bike saw the north side of 4500 rpm, got 3k miles on it now.

Ran the bike again with the PC hooked up to compare reading, have to figure out how to export the data to make sense and compare. Most of the info is in a “live” graph; really need to print it out.

I changed the rev limit to 6000, and did 1 6k shift, 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd. I swear it pulled the front wheel a little on the 1st shift. Pulling power is the most noticeable difference with the bike seeming it’s strongest between 2500 and 4500 in 3rd gear.

And I almost forgot (actually did, re-opened the post). I no longer have the muffled air cleaner noise that the obviously restricted stock air cleaner has. Just no reason the stage 1 is on the Fatboy and not the EG.

Port hole are you going to get your seeg dyno?I am running the ovals with screamin eagle air cleaner and a stage 1 down loan.I have been thinking about the race tuner with the vance true duals ,I would like to see how this set up preform's? [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Depends, if I can find a dealer capable enough in New Jersey. 2 closest dealers with a dyno I don’t have much faith in.

The bike runs good now with the download, there is a 2005 SEEG map for stage 1 and SE pipes included with the software. I may play around with it once I have some more time, but unless you can measure exhaust gas it is only a guessing game.

Also waiting to see if HDMaps.com has a map for my setup.
