Cam replacement tools and run out question
« on: July 31, 2008, 10:17:18 AM »

So, we are getting ready to do an oil pump replacement and the ancillary parts to go with it, including gear drives - maybe.

The picture below is of the special tools I have - see anything missing that we would need to replace the cams, pump and change to the torrington bearings?

And, when we get to the run out check, if it exceeds the limits what are the options? Put the stock cams back in and use new tensioners? Put everything back together as is and take it to a dealer?

I am assuming if the crank run out is excessive we are talking major disassembly here, maybe removing the engine from the frame?

Duane, that's the only way it can be done. Cases must be split to get the crank assembly out. They've raised the runout tolerance to the point where they don't have to replace engines, and get away with it with the new tensioner system. If your runout exceeds .003" but less than .013", get the new camplate, tensioner system and oil pump and call it a day. ;)

That's the problem with ordering parts in advance, especially the gear drive kit.

yeah, after learning what I have here (thanks again to all who post here!), that is why I am taking this on during the dark of winter - when I move back to VA...never really gets cold enough here that I cannot ride.

I am going to check them as described by Chief or Twolane by lifting the cam chain with the 1/8 punch and the mirror flash light, check the runout at the same time...at least I will know the tensioner pads are all et up.

This is my second bike with an Achilles heel - my KLR had the doo-hicky for the balancer system I replaced this spring, now I have the SERK.

That is a fine idea, as long as you have:

a - two bikes to chose from to ride
b - you have an oi pump failure in December, not May

and

c - you didn't just sell you second primary bike and now have nothing to ride

Mikers got a SERK he's selling out, I mean selling...

Yeah, tracking on the timing thing.

Ok, found this thread Duane.  Been covered pretty thoroughly.

Odds are in your favor the crank will be ok.  If not you really will have some pretty obvious choices though.

Least likely option will be finding the crank so far out you decide to tear everything down.

More likely choices (if there is runout greater than would allow gears) is staying with the old tension system or buying all the parts to change it ot the newer style.  If he rides a TON of miles I might consider the relatively expensive swap to the newer style tensioner system.  But only if he rides so much that I'd be changing the old tensioners every year just to be safe.

Otherwise a pair of shoes every three or four years is cheap and easy.  If I could go to gears I would.  And just never worry about it again.  If I couldn't I'd look to make it as easy and inexpensive of a repair as I could.

My concern.

So what is the max run out for switching to gear drives?. The book specs are for using the stock chain and shoes.

I mentioned earlier that you should stay with the chain if it exceeds .003". That's the normal runout spec. S&S I believe uses .0025". Not worth risking mashing gears and locking up the motor. ;)

Duane, Howie has been through this in far greater depth far more recently than I've had reason to.  So lacking any otherwise nailed down spec trust the guidance there.  It rings true.  If memory serves me though both the Andrews and S&S packaging have an acceptable specification as part of their gear drive packaging though.  So you should have hard numbers to go by.

Duane;
.003" is the max.

In you pic it looks like you are missing part of the bearing puller (2nd from the right). There is an outer sleeve for it.

(I got your message too late to call you back, I will call you tommorow,)

Any chance anyone has these tools for sale at a reasonable used price or has them and would consider renting them out?  I may make the change this winter.  It's just that if I have to spend a lot of money on tools, it take away a lot of the advantage of doing it myself.

Not required, but alignment pins for the new oil pump come in very handy.
