Progressive 440 Installed Adjust your Drive Belts
« on: June 16, 2005, 10:29:33 PM »

I just had installed a set of Progresive 440 shocks at Americade. The price was right and I really enjoyed the ride. Only thing was they never rechecked the belt tension which have been done . I rode home the 55 miles with a real tight belt I sensed something was wrong. I brought my bike in tonight to the dealer for some other work talked to the mechanic and he stated that the belt was way to tight and that he would adjust it tommorrow before i pick it up.

So, fair warning to all who install the shocks themselve or buy in experienced mechanics, that you must also adjust the drive belt after installing the shocks.

Here are a few pictures of the installed shocks on my2005 Candy Red ( The best Color) SEEG:

Actually, I myself questioned the need to adjust the belt tension when changing to Progressive 440s awhile ago in this thread: CLICK HERE

At the time, we blew off the difference in the ride height from the shock change as being insignificant.  Thanks for posting the information about your experience.

What was it that led you to believe the belt was tight?

Actually when hitting a large enough bump or pot hole the bike would feel like the tire bottom out against the road and the belt would actualy gte so tight that the pot hole or large bump felt too hard through the entire bike.

Good point but I am not clear that going from stock 12" to Progressive 12" would require any belt adjustment.  This would seem to apply only to those that changed from stock ride height but worth checking.

Elvis Good observation, 12" is 12" but the progressive shock still expands and retracts diffently then the Harley shocks do. Also once you give it 2 clicks it moves the swing arm up and down a good 1/2 inch or so. If you alos use 12.5 HD it givesa alittle more. In addtion I was told "Mechanic" that any type modification to the swing arm anr rear axle, via shocks, stabilizer etc should have the belt checked for proper adjustment.

Hey for the $25.00 to $50.00 to get the belt checked and re adjusted its worth the money compared to having a broken belt on longer trips, bearings failing in wheel or transmission due to over tightend belts.

Just my 2 cents

I know I know, I'm kinda off thread, BUT...  Isn't the stock shock a 12 inch?   [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I swapped the 12" air shocks on a RK Custom(which are the same awful shocks that come on a CVO bike) to Progressive 440 12 inchers recently & it did not change the belt tension at all.

I have the Harley tension gauge & I checked it before & after the swap, there was no difference.

When I put my 440 shocks on there was nowhere near the information on this site there is now. I just mounted them. That was about 6000 miles ago. All is well.
I am about ready for a new back tire so it will get adjusted then.
