New Car
« on: August 03, 2008, 06:12:19 PM »

In my reorganizing of finances/debt, I sold my Subaru and got this.  It's an '09 Toyota Matrix XRS.  Car has a 2.4 Liter 4 cylinder engine with variable valve timing on the intake cam (dual overhead cams), producing 152HP/168TQ, mated to a 5 speed electronically controlled automatic tranny, which you can also slap shift. The XRS is different than the other Matrix models in that it has a double wishbone suspension in the rear, 18" wheels/tires, larger rear discs for the braking system, and a sport trim interior.  Also has stability/traction control.  Bottom line is that it will scoot, and handles like a sports car, with additional feedback from the electronically controlled power steering (no hydraulic pump and hoses, with no belt drive).  EPA estimates are 21/29...I'm getting an honest 26mpg in a mixture of driving, and the motor has only got about 3K on it.

Other amenities include a JBL audio system with XM and Bluetooth, 9 speakers in 7 locations (including a big JBL subwoofer).   Rear seats fold completely flat for cargo and/or dogs.

I added the body side mouldings, rear bumper protector, and had the windows tinted.

It's a fun car to drive, and gets 6 more mpg than the Subaru.  After she's fully broken in at about 10k, I expect to get 30+mph on the highway, and 23 or so around town.  Uses regular unleaded too, instead of premium.  The bluetooth is nice...voice activated, and the stereo is awesome.  All controls are on the steering wheel for BT and JBL.  There's only a handful of these in the Southeast...kind of a Matrix CVO  :huepfenlol2:  The price was right since I work there too  ;)

Last one...it's a real practical car.  Most here would appreciate the handling and zip it's got.

Sharp lookin' car there, Terry!  I love white cars!  Only 37,000 on the 300C, so I'm gonna drive it's 16mpg butt into the ground, but will definitely be considering Toyotas next time around. :2vrolijk_21:

Hey Terry, keep us posted on how you like that Matrix. I'm thinking of getting one as my around town/commuter car. Looked at a Mini, but to small and to much for what your getting.

Hey Terry, keep us posted on how you like that Matrix. I'm thinking of getting one as my around town/commuter car. Looked at a Mini, but to small and to much for what your getting.

Talon..can already tell you, 'cause Suzanne's had one for almost two years...before I went to work for Toyota...and she loves it.  The XRS is even more fun because of the power to weight ratio and the 5 speed auto, plus the rear suspension makes a lot of difference.

For the price, and what you get, it's a great buy.  There's rebates on them right now too.  Very practical, comfortable seats, usable rear space that you can wipe out with a damp rag...no carpet.  You can find the invoice on edmunds or KBB...the XRS is a little hard to find, so you might not get it for invoice, but with the rebate, should come close in the end.  A LOT cheaper than the Mini, and a LOT cheaper to maintain, as you don't have to take it to a BMW dealer, which costs you 200 bucks just to cross the service dept door.

If you can find an XRS, or even an S...both have the 2.4 liter engine...take a drive, and the car will sell itself.

Hey TC...Good going  :2vrolijk_21: Man I bought a 1982 Toyata long bed pickup back in 94...Sucker had 233k on it...Had a SR22 4 cyl. engine with a 4-speed tranny and looked like chit  :vrolijk27: Bought it to drive back and forth to Waveland, Ms. from Mobile as a work truck. Drove that baby till 1998 6 days a week there back and forth. Put about 400 miles a day on it, got 25 miles to the gallon average, didn't burn a drop of oil and I only changed it(oil) about every 10k miles..Didn't miss a beat...Sold it after 4 years when the odometer stopped at 490 k miles and still running good. That sucker was geared low like a log truck...alway's kept lookin for a 5th gear going down the Interstate...Damn good truck  :2vrolijk_21:...
