Using Clay to check for valvetrain clearances
« on: August 03, 2008, 06:53:16 PM »

Does anyone know what is the best clay and where to purchase for engine work?

I'm thinking, well maybe not, that there is a speciality product more suited for this than modeling clay.

Thanks All,

JPB

Last 2 motors I helped with we used silly puddy from Toys R Us and it worked great.   It held shape and allowed us to easily cut through it to get a good check on depth.

That will work just fine. I actually buy it from a go fast builder that sells it. I think as long as it holds it's shape and depth it will be fine.

What build are you doing????

I used to be responsible for the people doing clay checks on sealing surfaces in an automotive assembly plant, so I'm familiar with some of the materials commonly used.  And I agree with Unbalanced, get some Play-Doh at your local toy store.  Real modeling clay tends to get hard and you have to work it and knead it before making your checks.  Play-Doh is usually ready to go right out of the tube.

Hoist,

I know you are 100% correct.  I am for sure doing it bas-ackwards.  This is the time to yank the case while I'm down but going to hold off till next time around.  I plan on taking it easy as possible on the old bottom end.  Hopefully it will hold till I save up some more $

Thanks DCFIREMAN for the source!

You are very welcome. If you need any help just give me a yell. Make sure when you have the motor down you check the crank run out. .003 is the max. I don't care what the MOCO says.

Thanks Again,

I put R&R 525 gear drive cams in this spring.  They have run very quiet.  Of course with the rest of the racket the motor makes you couldn't hear them if they were totally F$$kup

The runout this spring was around .0015

Hopefully it still resembles that number!

Where did you get the plate/fixture that you have the magnetic base holding on to?
