I'm glad to hear you are o.k. and came out with only a few scratches. One thing to burn into your mind, these big 'ole boats are not corner junkies.. I've seen many riders on these things ride them like sport bikes and I've been totally awed what some guy's do with these things.. Not Me... I don't mind going fast, and love going fast, as long as me and my PIG is pointed in one direction, Thats where i draw the fast line...

Take Care, I hope you get on your scoot soon..

Hey hey Copout...   at least you're around to mutter things like dumb ass...  dingbat...  dork...    rather than the not so attractive option!       Wear the tape,  rinse the woulnds in salt water..    (sea salt, not table salt...)  then move on to the Vitamin E and Aloe mixtures.     You done good, and now you know just how far it will/won't lean!

What I don't understand is,  since there was a median there, why didn't you just ride on the side of the median like a nascar boy!?!   :nervous:    Oh wait, never mind,  I was the one with that bright idea.  It didn't work out well at all....

Sorry about your mishap but glad you're around to tell us about it. Yep, you'll heal, the bike will get fixed and it'll just be a lesson learned.

Good to hear you're doing ok, just one of the clubs you'd rather not join.

Cindy and I bit the dirt last summer, first time in 40 years for me, it happens.   Just be glad you were able to walk away and write about it here.

The bike can get repqired and you'll heal too, quicker than you'd think. :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks again everyone. I am really glad I posted this thread, it has made me feel alot better about my mistake.

I spoke with my buddy today who was behind me when I went down and he described the incident as if the tires rolled out from under me. I told him I had been scraping the footboard bracket while in the turn that attaches to the frame and we basically figured out that the bike pivoted on the bracket causing me to lose any remaining traction from the tires and the bike fell on it's right side. There were no tire skid marks, just imprint marks from the crash bars in the asphalt. So I have learned a valuable lesson regarding the bikes limits AFTER you start to scrape the boards or brackets while in a turn. It makes sense and is something I learned back in 2001 when I attended motor school !!! The instructors always emphasized it was OK to scrape your boards at slow speeds for manuvers but NEVER scrape your boards at higher speeds or when it was not necessary. I think I was forced to push the bike harder in the turn to avoid the raised median causing the bike to bottom out and roll the tires out from under me. Basically, I entered the turn too late and too fast   :-\

My insurance company adjuster came out today and looked the bike over at the dealer (I had it picked up today by my excellent dealer in McHenry, IL). As of right now the estimate to repair it is right around $4000.00 minus my deductible. One of the mechanics said he wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be more like $7000.00 total after it is all said and done.

Copout,

Reading your post brought back some recent memories. I'm glad you came away with just the scrapes you did. Now, the fun can begin.

One thing I learned when I went through this last year. This came from "The Frame Man" out in Cali. When the front crash bar gets bent, there is a very good chance that the frame neck gets bent by the crash bar. He told me to check the slot the bar goes into. If that slot is bent, it likely that the frame is bent.

I am thrilled whit the finished product I came out with after my 4-wheeling excursion. I hope everything works out for you as well.

Chief,

What if the frame neck is bent ? I was told they automatically have to replace the frame, do you know if that's true ?

Any frame bend - even a bent tab - frame is replaced or bike is totaled - to the best of my knowledge.

Hmmm..That would really surprise me if my bike was totalled after a fall at 10 mph !!! Knowing my luck the insurance company would give me 15 grand !!! NO MORE CVO's for me I guess  >:(

Sorry about the crash..... been there and done that.  Fortunately, it has been several years since I crashed.  Best to learn from it and then get back on and ride.

Glad you walked away and are now telling us about it.

Most insurance companies will treat you fair.  But if not, there are ways to deal with them.  Don't spend anytime worrying about it ;)

I'm so sorry to hear about that copout, but glad you're OK. Refreshing to hear someone not try to make excuses or blame someone else. We've all messed up before at one point or another. We learn from our mistakes, but admitting them is half the battle! :2vrolijk_21:

These bikes are amazingly resilient. Have the bike appraised and negotiate a settlement with your ins co. Then do a "temporary" repair while you wait for parts. You'll be amazed how well 200 MPH duct tape holds up! :o

I'm very serious here. Replace the bare minimum while you put all parts on order. Don't be embarrassed to ride with parts removed/taped up. You'll still be riding. Granted, you won't be setup up for trips, but you can still use the bike. Replace the handlebars if required, and anything else that affects the functionality of the bike. Remove or tape everything else up til your new parts come in. ;)

I did exactly what Hoist is saying to my 2000 RK. Laid it down to the tune of $8,000.00. Drove around with makeshift parts,no hard bags for a month. Lots of looks but I still rode. Glad you're OK. THE MUFFMAN

Have seen a few bikes where individuals "straightened" a bent tab on a frame - reason they did this was the dealer would not.  Frame integrity is kinda important (understatement), considering what it does, & a bent frame compromises that integrity.

Not sure on the extent of the damages to your bike, but the money figure arrived at determines whether or not it's totaled or fixed. A percentage of the bike's worth vs cost to get it fixed.  Suppose I'm lucky they don't do that for riders, since they would "total" me if I had a broke toe from a wreck but that's beside the point.

Hope you are feeling better now & if you go the Howie authorized duct tape & ride it route, try to get some orange & black colors for the duct tape you use. Would be color co-ordinated & might give 2LBR some ideas for a new paint job if you posted a pic of your temporary repair.   :huepfenlol2:
