On the road and need some help.
« on: August 05, 2008, 06:57:55 AM »

The gremlins have REALLY taken over the bike now.

Every time I come to a stop the idle drops and the bike stalls out. Then it starts up and runs okay. But whenever I pull in the clutch and close off the throttle, the rpms drop like a brick and the engine dies. Yesterday I was riding the mountain roads, and just pulled in the clutch. The rpms dropped and the bike died. I could not get it to start while rolling, so I had to roll off to the side of the road and restart it. So now to keep it from dying, I have to constantly blip the throttle when shifting, and blip it all the way down and milk it back to idle. Yesterday I loaded another map and that did not help. I raised the idle up to 1008. Thinking the altitude (Colorado vs sea level Los Angeles) was an issue, I enrichend the afrs at just above idle and below to 13.021. Today I will try clearing the IAC offsets, reloading the original map, and running the IAC warm up to 280 degrees.

What do I need to check and or adjust? I am in Telluride Colorado.
I don't know if this makes a difference but the weather is cooler and the altitude is greater.

When the bike is moving, it runs fine, it's just these "little things" that are driving me nuts.

Yes, the bike idles after restart. You mean the VSS located in the tranny? I'll do it.

Most likely the IAC motor. The IAC controls the air at idle. It is mounted on top of the throttle body.

The air it thinner in Colorado, so if anything you would want to run a little leaner, might want to change the the AFR back to where you had it. If you get over to the front range on the eastern side of the mountains, there are a couple of shops here that could probably get you in if you don't figure it out.

Red Hill, in Lyons  303-823-6363

Sanger's in Fort Collins  970-419-5500

Cuthbertss is further south, near Colorado Springs, he may know of a good shop that's closer to you.

Check to make sure that one of the wires are not cut.

That happened to me last year after leaving Nelson

I would lean torwards the IAC like hd-dude said, if it were a speed sensor I would think you would have problems at all speeds, if you need parts, there's a HD dealer in Durango, it's 70 miles south on 550, a nice ride too. Good luck!

Well here is the latest.

I tried loading another map, and that did nothing. So I took the original map, and enrichened the afrs at from 768 to 1280 rpms to from 13.542 t0 13.021. I also raised the idle from 996 to 1088 rpms. Then I cleared the IAC offsets, reloaded the modified original map. I reinitialized and started the bike. It ran rough for a bit, then "learned" it's way a bit more. It seems to be running fine, except that the idle still drops below the set rpms, then comes back up. So I just changed the IAC stop setting from 8 to 13, hoping that will stop the idle from dropping below the set parameter of 1088. Was that the appropriate action to take for the idle dropping issue?

I am still not sure of what happened. Maybe it was the heat, maybe it was cheap gas, I don't know. All I do know is that somehow the map inside the ECM got whacked and I had clear everything and reload it.

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Thanks

Yea it sounds simple, as long as you travel with a laptop and Zippers software. I got lucky my buddy James always has his PC, and I take the software with me just for these kinds of things.
I'm thinking the ECM got scrambled by:

Exposure to excesive heat
Poor gas ( I ran a couple of tanks of 87 and one 86 octane)
RF Bleed over from the CB Radio.

I mention that because on two occasions the ECM "wigged out" when I keyed the CB mic to speak. Both times I had to pull the ECM fuse to reset it.

But those are guesses. I really don't know.

Mark, you're making it sound like an awfully temperamental part to be the foundation piece to keep you going down the road.

Well it was performing solid until these issues cropped up. Like I said, I don't know what happened, or caused it, but like any computer on the fritz, I had to reboot, and reload the software to get it to work right. Maybe like most computers the ECM may be susceptible to heat, or RF bombardment, I just don't know. I sent Zippers a ton of e-mail, and have not gotten any answer. They're all at Sturgis.

I think you pulled over in CO and got a Gremlin permit.  I hope you got the Doe stamp also.  They normally travel as breading pairs and it's important to get both.

They never all travel together. I know they had to leave someone at the shop. Just another episode in their great customer service.

Be Safe

THE DAWG

DAWG,

I managed to speak one time to Dull Randy, and he said all he is doing is forwarding my e-mails to John Fitz who is at Sturgis with everyone else. He really did NOTHING to help me out, and he knew I was on the road and struggling. I left VMs asking him to call me as this stalling out is a safety issue, especially on these winding Colorado mountain roads. Still no contact. I tried calling him again yesterday everytime we came to a stop, and all Brandy could do was give me his voice mail and say he was at lunch or out of the office. I felt like he was avoiding me.

I was tempted to ride this thing to Black Hills HD Parking lot where they are set up and have them resolve the issue. Lucky for me I found some good support from guys over on Harley Tech Talk who helped me me get this thing running right again. However I still have NO IDEA what caused the ECM to wig out in the first place.
