An old favourite!
« on: August 05, 2008, 02:06:39 PM »

I'm torn between buying a CUSE4 and keeping the CUSE2. I love the CUSE2, but it just keeps on having problems. But now "the fix" is out, for the engine problems at least - and I hope it's actually the cure, not just the fix. And hey, I've replaced just about everything else......

So, to get to the point - if I keep it, I thought that when they do "the fix", I might get the cams changed.  My idea would be to go for low end torque, so I thought about the SE251. Jacques Bisounours had these fitted to his '07 and thought they were great.  Also, they are reasonably priced!

I'm not planning any other engine work, but thought that I might benefit by going for a larger throttle body too - what is the expert opinion here?  Remember, I'm looking for low end torque and driveability, not out and out power, and I don't want any other issues, like the cruise control not working with a big throttle body and so on......

Thoughts?

Not sure about what TB size, but when I did the work on my pumpkin I had my existing throttle body bored so I would ensure that everything worked...

I'd have trouble getting that done here!

I was recently told that for a mild street build, ie: using the 251 or 257 w/10.25, to keep the smaller TB as it creates more turbulence. Any comments from the gallery?

Not on a 110. Turbulance maybe, but too much PD loss. The 251 cam with the 50mm SETB works well with a 110. Even with no head or compression work, but will do better with some porting and maybe 1/2 point of comp, like 9.8:1 maybe 10:1. I kept mine under 10. But the 110 needs to breath with the stock 110 heads. 50mm TB min is a must if you're doing any work, even if you're not as evidenced by HD's change from 46mm in '07 to 50mm in '08. That's what we've found thru the feedback from the engine designer and thru the testing we did, . ;)

Thanks Howie.

And the 50mm TB to use? (Stock 08 one?) Obviously cruise control will be fine - do I need to get a new backing plate for the SE filter?  And finally, is there a near enough map (no dyno stuff is possible!) for the SERT?

The SE is fine. The HPI is nice too. The '08's come with the 50mm already. If you plan other changes down the road, it might be the time to think of even a larger one for the future needs.

I'm sure there are some maps available for a 251 setup for the SERT, but nothing beats a custom tune. ;)

So the cheapest is fine!  ;) No, there will be no further mods.  Yes a custom tune would be best, but there's no way to get it done here.

I'll also be using a HeadQuarters Pro Tuner, which will take care of the AFR, but are SERT maps saveable? I'm thinking that if someone else has the same setup, and has had a dyno tune done, their map might be close enough for me....

Hoist, Glad you chimed in!  My comment originally arose from a conversation regarding large bore (1800-1900), multi valve V metrics use of smaller 43mm TB's. and escalated to the TB size on HD low street builds. It sounds like you are saying that the addition of a 257 with a small bump in comp. would definitely require some porting and a 50mm + TB while the 251 with a small bump could get by with just a 50 TB?  Thanks
