When I had my bike in last Nov/Dec for the engine replacement I had the tech chg the bars to WO and put in the Heat Demons.  When I got the take off parts back there was definitely something stuck up inside the bars at the left handgrip with wires coming out of it.  Don't know if they seal it somehow but it sure as heck was solid and I could not have gotten new wires through it.  I wondered WTF it was since I too understood the grips to be external.  I wanted them because I was going to give them to a friend to put on his bike.  But the left grip was a pos after they got it off.

UPDATE:

I get to the dealer at 4pm an hour later than I was told the bike would be ready and have to wait 30 minutes for them to finish putting my bike back together.  The heated grips DO NOT work. My bike has been there for 3 days and we have had 80 degree weather (We do not have a A/C in Port Townsend our summers are mild) several of my buddies stopped by to ride I couldn't ride because my bike is in the shop and after three days it is still not fixed. :soapbox: :soapbox:

I was pretty mad when the service tech told me, Jared the service manager was with someone else when I got there and after waiting 30 minutes for my bike I dindn't want to continue waiting and was ready to go.  Dale the parts manager did stop by while I was waiting - He has been great to work with in the past so I asked him about the grips.  He said that everything is external just as you said TCnBahm, he took me over to the parts department to show me the grips but the only grips he had were 2008 and they are for the drive by wire so they are different.  I was pissed and told him that I felt like I was being jerked around, that they had some new tech on my bike that did not have a clue about the heated grips.  He said that the grips when they get hot can overheat and it causes the end of the grip to melt and come apart - when this happens it gets lodged into the end of the handlebar. This causes the problem they cannot get the pieces that have melted out to remove the wires and thread the new wires back to the battery (This is why he said the tank was off because the heated grips are home run back to the battery -they are not spliced).  I believe the tech did not know what he was doing and instead of f$%&ing something up he was taking extra precaution (and scratching his azz and head trying to figure it out for a whole day or two days..) as to how to remove the pieces.

The service writer told me when I was leaving that they have a service tech -that has changed several of the grips that have had this exact same problem in the past -that will be repairing the bike when I come back in for the repair.  They talk as if it is common and to be honest it felt like they were straightup about what happened - of course they left out they put a green tech on the repair and he was clueless when he ran into the problem.

The real bummer is I had a service done at 4000 miles.  The oil change etc.  When I bought the bike I joined this website and after all the Great Info here I knew that the big eas lean from the factory so I went to the dealer and he recommend the techlusion.  I considered getting a SERT but would have had to go to Latus in Portland to feel comfortable and the dealer said the techlusion could be removed with no trace so in case there was a warranty issue so I got the techlusion.  The bike had been lagging on take off recently so when I went in for service I told them.  They said they adjusted the techlusion and on the way home the bike never ran so well.  The notice in power and torque were dramatic.  I finally understood what the Screaming Eagle 110 was about.

Well now on the way home the old problem is back.  Don't know why -the best way I can describe it is The motor seems like it has to work when I give it the throttle -as if I in 4th gear at 2200-2300 rpm the bike lags a little with the roll of the throttle.  This has been corrected when I brought the bike home from the service when I gave the bike throttle it went no lag (of course if I was low speed , high gear, low rpm it would still hesitate) the bike jumped. The power was nice.  I think it might be an air adjustment.  It sucks though I am going to Portland this weekend and really was getting used to the power and the feel of the bike corrected.

I guess when I take it in to have the recall uh I mean enhancement done they can correct the lag and maybe just maybe fix the grips - I will be getting the heat demons!

I want to say Thanks for all the posts! My wife and I recently had twin girls and my time and energy are mostly on my family but I do appreciate all the information and laughs I get on this site.  Sometimes I only have a little time and just view as a visitor but always appreciate the information.  It is a great benefit to have all this information so readily available.

It is important to relay identities of lier stealer types to protect your fellow CVO brethren!

I am still a newbie - Not trying to keep secrets just wanted to follow correct order of posting on the site.  The dealer is Legend Harley Davidson in Silverdale, WA.  I do want to say that they have been very good to deal with in the past though.

I to followed everyone else and switched to the Heat Demons. My stock ones would only work on High so I knew they were on the way out. The Heat Demons are much better and the switch is easier to use than that twist knob. Hd dude,Jim did a great job. :2vrolijk_21:

This clearly demonstrates that knowledge is power... pre-internet days a dealer like this used to get away with crap like that... now with a key stroke you can find out that they are jerking you around!

It's very hard to find quality mechanics over the summer... sometimes they will hire just about anybody!

Worst part is they violated your trust... best part is that they screwed you around on a relatively small job.

Be thankfull that it was "just grips" that it happened with!

I would start searching out a good quality indy near you for the next issue that arises, it is also a good opportunity/excuse to start fixing your own ride so you really know how it works!

You have enough stress in your house with your other new arrivals!!! :2vrolijk_21:

because the heated grips are home run back to the battery -they are not spliced

Unless they changed them in 07 from what they were in 06, that statement is also untrue.  There are connectors where the grip wiring comes out of the bars at the bar clamp location.

Anyone here with an 07 that has installed the Heat Demons who can verify what I'm saying?

It doesn't really matter at this point...just get the heat demons put in...they are simple to install, and they work.

I've been to Port Townsend via ferry boat once.  Great town!!  Beautiful location!!

Enjoy your bike, and I hope you can get it all straightened out when you get back from your trip. :2vrolijk_21:

Hey Guys,

I have a concern and would appreciate some feedback.  I took my motorcycle in Monday to the dealer to have the heated grips replaced.  Should have been a couple of hours the service manager said - well at 4pm Monday afternoon he told me that the heating element had come apart inside the handlebar and they were having a difficult time getting it out.  I wanted to go back and talk to the service tech and when I went back he had my bike totally taken apart.  Front fairing was off, radio was taken out, seat was off both saddlebags were off, tank was off, all the handlebar controls were off I think the only thing that was left was the tourpak, motor and wheels.  I called yesterday and the service rep said that another tech that had dealt with this before was now working on the bike but it would be another day before it was repaired.

I am supposed to call at noon today and they say the heated grips should be replaced by and the bike ready by 4pm.

3 days to fix heated grips seems a little long and I am concerned with the bike being totally dismantled for this fix.  Have you guys ever heard of this problem and it taken so long to get fixed.

I have definitely decided to get the extended warranty I can't imagine what the bill would be if I had to pay for this.

My big concern is I am going to Portland this weekend and don't want to be on the side of I-5 with some issue that might be created from this.

The left side grip does not have any heating element inside the handlebar, however, the left side grip does have a full length internal, epoxy encapsulated, rod that does go into the inside of the handlebar.  The wires protrude from the end of this internal device.  It most likely houses the electronics and rheostat for the temperature control circuit.

This OD of this rod is almost the same size as the ID of the Handlebar.  When water gets around this, rust builds up and can seize this rod.  I have replaced mine twice, and last time for sure, and I had the problem each time.  You will also note that when you purchase a new set of Harley Grips there is a support bushing that keeps this rod centered to keep it from flexing and cracking at it's base during shipping.  It gets removed just prior to installing.

A very carefully controlled drill bit of the correct diameter made quick work of removing this rod.

My guess is that water enters in through the controls switches and runs down the inside of the handlebar and surrounding the rod. This not only contributes to the rust but the failure of the electronics and/or rheostat.

As far as the seat being removed, it was to follow procedure to disconnect the battery.

The fariring was removed to get access to the radio and rewire the new hand grips.

The manual calls for the radio to be removed to gain better access to the slot located at the almost bottom center of the handlebar to facilitate the removal and replacement of the wires.

I can't explain the other items they removed.

I too don't know about the 07's, but the 08's have a plug under the fairing where they exit the handlebars.  Pretty safe guess to assume that the 07's are the same as the 06 and 08's
