How reliable is the engine?
« on: February 01, 2004, 10:04:31 AM »

Now, I must ask this....

How reliable is the screamin' eagle cvo engine for long trips? My previous bike had the stage 2 big bore kit installed and performance was ok, but I had issues with the gaskets and one cilinder head had to be replaced. I was told that on my ride to Milwaukee the bike overheated and that was the cause for the problems I had with that bike.

I plan to use the cvo for long trips and I really dont want to hev the same problems as before....

Any comments?

Miguel

After 3200 miles Boston to Milwaukee  for the 100th the only problem I had was a little blow by on the front breather. I hear that this is typical on this motor. Had outside temps of 100 in Ill and 60 in Canada. This bike (in my opinion) and motor show be in ALL HD's.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will look into the vents. I drove my previous bike (Ultra) in the 100th anniversary parade in Milwaukee and it was awful.

I just got back from my first ride. The weather is beautiful and the ride was great. What a bike!

Miguel I was at the 100th too.  I see that you're from Mexico.  I may have pictures of your bike.  I took photos of all the foreign plates that I saw (for a section of my photo album of that trip).

Sounds like your bike was running a little too lean.....which causes the overheating.

JCZ,

My plates at the 100th were from my hometown: Puebla, Mexico. The bike was this one:

It was a great bike, but the CVO blows it away.

Curious how many miles are on the SEEG now.  Magoo I know that you've got pretty high mileage for an orange and black, how many?

Anybody else who thinks they may have high mileage, how many miles??

Litox,  long trips is about all I do on mine.  I've got a 03'SERK with 17k miles on it now.  Never had a problem with the motor yet.  My next trip is in May to Vegas.  1700 miles 1 way and I'm looking forward to it.  Just keep your maintenance up and you should be fine.

Well, I thought this thread would be a good place for my first post on this fine message board.  Long trips shouldn't be any issue at all.  I put 10k miles on my '05 SEEG in the first two months of ownership and have not experienced any issues.  Not even a hiccup.

Thanks for the welcome JCV.  I haven't met Magoo, or any other CVO owners yet.  Oops, forgot Rich at Rich's custom upholstery.  He loaned me the seat off his FLHRSEI2.  I didn't hear about the CVO owner's GTG and Easyriders Bike Show, guess I am kinda out of the loop.  I have been away from the Harley family for about three years.  Riding is therapy for me, so I picked up the bike in the middle of October and actually put the 10k on in 6 weeks.  I rode to southern CA twice (once to see my brother pick up his VRSCSE), doing the Iron Butt on the return each time.  I took my wife to Vegas to see the Blue Man Group and then continued on without her through the Grand Canyon and southern AZ.  IT was a great six weeks, I road a lot of coastline, saw the Redwoods, Joshua Tree and Pipe Organ Cactus National Parks.  I've been home with the family for the holidays and I'm about ready to hit the road again.  I'm thinkin' Baja, anybody up for it?

JC got a little over 19,000 miles on the bike and it a little over 9 months old.  Have had no issues other than the compensator nut coming lose, that was before the trip to Reno where the bike was upgraded with exhaust.power commander and dyno tuned have had no issues about reliablity with this motor at all.

litox....I see from the members map that you're located in South Central Mexico.  A couple of friends and I have been discussing a ride from El Paso, Tx South through Mexico to San Jose, Costa Rica in the late summer or early fall.  Any comments or considerations about the roads and/or travel beyond Mexico City?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.
