Hello CVO Pilots regarding the old "0906 Campaign."
« on: August 14, 2008, 02:13:04 PM »

I have an FLHTCUSE3 Coppertop with 04/08 build date. Bike was stalling out of the hole with excessive heat and zip oil pressure as the heat increased. The MOCO advised I have the new cylinders and guides? Was the first at my dealer to get the update installed on August 8th and the following action was performed: They removed seat, console & fuel tank, right side footboard, heat shields, saddlebags, disconnect mufflers & exhaust system, removed rear cylinder heat shield, air cleaner, top front stabilizer & both upper rocker boxes, spark plugs front & rear rocker carriers, push rods & tubes both lower rocker boxes, horn & bracket, head temp sensor, throttle body, both cylinder heads, both cylinders and disconnected connectors from induction module. They inspected cylinders bores for any damage and reassembled engine with new gaskets, ACR solenoids and replaced the crankcase bolt. The MOCO accessed 5 hours to complete, it took a good 6.5 hours and the mechanic cranked.
Outcome: After 80 miles in moderate heat it is running better, but a real test is yet to come.

Ciao,
Ron

So...  they replaced top end gaskets and ACRs and installed the new crankcase bolt.  None of that will have anything to do with how the bike runs or the heat it generates.  Unless they repaired some pre-existing problem like an unknown intake leak as part of the task they did nothing was changed to impact how the bike runs.

Theoretically your right, my throttle problem painted a leak, but none was found per dealer? My hope was a leaking ACR or gasket. The heat is another bucket of fish and not likely to be resolved by MOCO.

Thanks for the reply,
Ron

Good luck with it Ron.  Gremlins aren't always noticed when they are fixed.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

Update:

I have now put another 100 miles on the Hollering Turkey post "0906" and the symptoms quickly returned.
It was interesting to read the August 2008 test article by Baggers Magazine on the '08 Screaming Eagle Road King.
It seems they also experienced the engine caving off idle and felt the culprit might be two lean a mixture or something inherent to the throttle body. ya think?

My fork lock went in-op yesterday and added to my list of disgust, not to mention the pathetic nav system.
The MOCO originally charged $1000,00 for the embedded GPS and has now dropped the asking price to $795.
What a piece of crap, the cheapest $129.00 out of the box GPS is a thousand times better and you don't have to install no stinking CD ROM to navigate across town.
Enough venting for now.

Yes, but think of the heritage you are buying into!  The brotherhood...the, um....hundred and five years.  The product develop..........oh, never mind.

UGH....I have some of those symptoms (heat, caving coming off the line).  Other than that, all is fine but don't have that many miles built up (4K).  I wonder if I'll get a recall letter?  Build date is 05/08.

The "Service Bulletin" is for models built April 9, through May 13, 2008. I would think you will be affected and should receive the letter. If not, check with your VIN # on H-D.com, this should confirm your involvement.
I would also call HD customer service 414-343-4056 and voice your concerns about the off idle stalling. This is a bad problem and something we should not have to endure and I can assure you that once you have to make a quick or evasive move and you open the throttle, release the clutch and freaking thing stalls, your ass will suck the threads out of that most uncomfortable seat.

Ron,

The off idle caving could be the 50mm Throttle body the "08"'s have for their AFR mix. Your throttle body would present air to a hot engine faster that the "07"'s 48mm throttle body.  I run into the throttle drop off idle once in awhile on my "07" Smurf (CUSE2). Especially on a hot day.  I'm still waiting for the 0905 campaign.

Not only is the off-idle stalling a PITA, it is a safety defect.  Other manufacturers have been forced to perform recalls for this sort of thing, but somehow Harley has been able to avoid the issue for several years.  In the past, since everyone immediately modified their bikes with A/C, pipes, and tuners H-D pretty much got a free ride as the owner's "fixed" the problem themselves.  Now that more and more people are leaving them stock to avoid warranty issues, they have to be getting more complaints about this.  BTW, after calling or writing H-D about it, visit the NHTSA web site and submit a complaint there as well.  Those are the ones that can cause the government to initiate an investigation that could ultimately lead to a recall.
