Blackberry weather radar images
« on: August 16, 2008, 10:55:12 AM »

Has anyone been able to see weather radar images, NOAA, from your Blackberry (Verizon)? The wife and I found one way that works. From the NWS site we found a link called "Local Radar Dial Up" Sent that link to the Blackberry via email and then accessed it. The image loads and then you can move around the country from links at the bottom of the page. You can even see a loop version from the image by selecting "Get Link" when on the image. Pretty cool when traveling. We found it after we got caught the other night in a down pour.

Here's the link the the Iowa dial-up version. http://radar.weather.gov/radar_lite.php?rid=dmx&product=N0R&loop=no

Hope it works for you too. Does anyone have another way to view radar on the road??

Yes two ways.
While riding my primary is my Garmin 478 with XM weather. This has almost an live radar (by Garmin standards) screen that is typically within 0-5 minutes of your location.

Works very good. Last year coming home from the National HOG rally on Rt 81 I knew when to pull over to get my rain gear on when I could pull over to take it off (was 103 degrees when not raining) and I could see when I had to get off the road and take cover. I was hiding out at a gas station for over two hours with incredible and scary lightning.

And after that I could check my screen to see that I was only going to get soaked to finish the ride after the lightning had passed.

The other item I use is www.My-cast.com

I use this at least everyday! Live Doppler radar and more. This is free and very easy to use. You do have to sign up for it though. And for $4 a month you can get it on your cell phone. I'll try and get some pictures of it later if it rains. Very worthwhile. Plus you have the option of showing lightning strikes in a loop, good to see which way the violent weather is moving.

Until I purchase a GPS with radar capabilities I have found using the internet I can view local radar on my PDA. Locally I use a local tv stations radar that is refreshed every three minutes. Will have to try NOAA's site now too.

Greg,
I have several weather sites bookmarked in my blackberry that is accessed via the browser.
One that I really like is weather underground which has some good animated radar images.
Once you save the bookmark in your blackberry browser, just fire it up, enter your city and or zip and get the image.

Try this link on your blackberry: mobile[dot]wunderground[dot]com
mobile.wunderground.com

The bookmark for NOAA is mobile[dot]srh[dot]noaa[dot]gov

The beauty of these is of course FREE integration with the browser of your blackberry.

Hope this helps

The neat thing with the my-cast is that you don't have to enter your location - it knows where you are based on your cell phone.
