Road Glide VS Street Glide Wind Turbulance And Buffeting
« on: August 16, 2008, 02:11:46 PM »

So i was planning on Trading in my Heritage Softail and buying a SG or RG (a SERG). However when i test rode these bikes yesterday, the turbulance and buffeting my wife and i experienced was extreme. It felt like someone was hitting me on my helmet at speeds above 45 MPH, it was very uncomfortable and was giving me a headache. My wife also felt alot of buffeting on the back. I realize niether windshield was perfect for me, as i am 5ft 5in tall. I thought the Road Glide would have been better, because the stock shield is taller, but is was only marginally better. I am also not opposed to wind as i usually ride my current bike without a windshield even on the HWY. This however was not just wind. Will the proper size windshield such as a Clearview cure this ??? I want to look over the windshield not thru it. Do all fairing bikes have turbulance and buffeting like this ??? Should i be looking at a Road King instead ???
THANKS For All Your Help And Opinions....

Most people will go with a windshield that is just below their line of sight.  Works for me!

You could buy a BMW K1200LT.  Comes with a power adjustable windshield.

By the way.  Do you know what a porcupine and a BMW bike have in common?

They both have pricks on their back!

I retract that last comment!  Didn't mean to offend the porcupines!

On either the SG or RG the proper height windsceen will cure most wind buffeting conditions that affect your head.  The SG, with fork mounted fairing, is more susceptable to wind buffeting affecting steering.  The frame mounted RG fairing is more streamlined and does not affect the steering of the bike nearly as much as a fork mounted fairing.  Also in my experience wind tends to move around the RG fairing more than the SG because the fairing itself is further forward.  All that being said, with properly sized windscreen, I think you would be happy with either model depending on your personal preference.

Clearview Shields is a popular windscreen used by many on this site including myself.  I would recommend their products and in particular the shields with the recurve feature.  Hope this helps.

That K1200 is a lot of value for the money, and a nice machine.

I will second that. I rode one of these and it did everything well, just smooth
and comfy. Lots of power, good handling, and the best brakes in the industry.
It evens comes with a warning about the brakes being so strong that other
people behind you cannot stop as fast as you can. :o  I will get one of these
long before I ever think about a gold wing.

Agreed....looked at the BMW recently...very tempting. Lots of technology in that bike and pretty much fully loaded.
