LED Fuel Gauge problem
« on: August 24, 2008, 10:36:40 AM »

Installed the flush led fuel gauge in my 08 SERK. Everything worked fine (its even pretty accurate!) for weeks. Now the fuel pump icon does not light up. It is supposed to indicate that the FP is running. Pump is running but the light does not come on. Fuel level works fine. Does anyone have the shop manual that gives the trouble shooting for this? There are only three wires. I guess I need to know which one shows FP operation.
Thanks, Bill

Are you refering to the engine indicator in the speedo? This only illuminates when you first to the bike and the run switch on or if you have a trouble code.

I put a blue LED fuel gauge on my SERK and a speedo allowing for blue backlighting (blue on both to match the bike).  I had two or three of the LED lights go out on the fuel gauge, but I let the dealer deal with it.  They just installed a new gauge.  No attempt to repair or service.

Maybe thats what has happened. I always thought of LEDs as being pretty durable. I'm having enough problems getting my dealer to repair the other problems with the bike. Since I installed the gauge myself, I don't know how I will get HD to replace it. :(

Other people had issues with the LEDs as well. If your dealer wouldn't do it, at least the vendor where you bought the part should exchange it for a new one.

Yep, I replaced the indicator section 3 times (bought from local dealer, no problem with exchanges) on wife's RK. LEDs finally work, showing that the level indication is still wrong.  ::)

I had a problem of my LED's sticking. Dealer adjusted the float inside of the tank but I still don't trust it now.

If you are talking about the the little gas pump symbol above the LED dots, I hardly ever see it when I'm riding. It's not a very bright light anyway.

That's the one. it serves no purpose anyway but when you put the coin down, I think is should work. At least the guage part is pretty accourate.

They have a lot of problems with them.  I bought mine from Chicago Harley, had problem and they send me a replacement with a label for return package.  The seller should replace it for you without any question asked.  One more thing, the pump icon gas nothing to do with FP operation.  It is there to show that is a fuel gauge.

Is there any way to calibrate it??

Wife's was replaced again (#4), this time the dealer did the install. I bought the original there and did the previous 3 myself. This one is again showing all LEDs on a full tank (for now), and the 'gas pump' light is no longer there. Parts guy said apparently the newer ones don't have it??  Anyway, they told us this would be the last one, since it's out of 'war..nty'.  Right. You'd think the warranty would start with each replacement.  Her original fuel gauge was totally inaccurate when new, even after 3 attempts by the dealer to fix it. We gave up. So we figured that the LED indicator wouldn't be any more accurate.
What a PITA. Bought it in good faith that it would work. >:(

There's a float that has to be adjusted. The dealer did mine but its not right. It shows me being closer to empty than I really am but I would rather stop too soon to refill than run out of gas again because the gauge got stuck showing a quarter of a tank in the middle of nowhere.

There is a problem with the low fuel light also.  Mine has intermittent problem,. Sometimes shows low fuel too early and sometimes too late.  But my "range" function has been fairly accurate so far.
