Oil puke
« on: August 25, 2008, 11:34:48 AM »

I have a small amount of oil puking from my air cleaner.  It's just enough to bugger up my chrome etc.  I have read threads on this and most say don't worry about it...ride and be happy.  I just don't like it.  Any ideas on what to do to stop it?  thanks   :cherry:

flyingwillie's in an 06 so the product improvement doesn't apply.  There have been some posts about the backing plate on the SE aircleaner not having as much of the problem.  I don't know if yours is an SE plate or not Warren.  I haven't had the problem with mine... on no... I shouldn't have said that.  :nervous:

I know there was an update at some point along the way to address the 'oil puke' problem so I'd check with the dealer the next time you have it in.  They put the 'fix' on my 03 when it had the problem.

Try using 3 to 3-1/2 qts next time you change your oil Warren. 4 qts is too much unless you're flushing ALL the oil out when you change it. Try putting in 3, warm it up and check it. Top off as necessary, but I doubt you'll be adding in another full qt. ;)

Good idea Howie, knowing our dealership they probably put 4 1/2 instead of 4 or less.  That's what they did to mine last time it was there.  :-[

Ice, Howie and Bob,
thanks for the input.  I am going to take the cover off tonight and give it a good look.  By now it should have puked out the extra 1/2 qt!!  :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:  I will also call my local service manager and ask him.

Ice, btw I work for a company based just outside Zurich, in Oftringen.  I usually go there 4 times per year. Beautiful place, especially Lucern.  :cherry:

There are quite a few aftermarket products that are supposed to eliminate this as well.  I haven't tried them but several people on the site are running them.

Warren, 1/2 qt puking from the breather is a HUGE mess! You won't bet getting close to that unless it's everywhere! It's just a fine mist and doesn't take much to be annoyingly messy. If you blew 1/2 qt outta there, you'd think you're on a 110!!! ::) ;D ;D ;D

Tried em all Ernie. Didn't have any luck with them. I used the Kury Bluegrass Breather and piped it to the ground! ;)

Try running the oil level halfway between the Full and Add lines on the dipstick when hot.  Seems to help on many bikes.

Here is a fix that does work.  I am quite pleased with this little gizmo...it catches the oil, keeps it out of the combustion chamber, and keeps it off the ground and your tires/wheels, etc.  Previously discussed here:

Haven't had this problem on mine.  I run a half quart low, however, I had it on the 02 Ultra even at 3/4 quart low.  Depending on your cover style, there's myriad ways of dealing with it on the cheap.  Most of the time I just stuffed a rolled up paper towel between the cover and the filter........................or stuck one of those "pads" on the inside bottom of the cover.  Worked great for keeping oil mist off of Renea's right leg and the motorcycle.
