« on: August 28, 2008, 05:24:02 AM »

I use Mobil 1 V-Twin but wondering if anyone of you out there use an oil additives like Tufoil or Slick 50 as well, if so what? Always keen to learn.

When I had my 2000 88 c.i. I used z-max, they said to take the small bottle and put it in the oil tank.
It must have been okay. Just traded it in last year. No issues with the engine. Not even one.

Oh have you seen this?

I used their product ALOT when I was building and driving hot rods and street rods. Good stuff.

If you are already using synthetic oil, I don't think oil additives will help.  They may hurt.  Synthetic oil is better than fossil oil and is formulated to perform best as is.  I use Amsoil.  Z-max claims to treat the metal and that may actually be OK.  I am sticking to amsoil and no additives.

Best advice is to avoid oil additives and stick with the additive package that comes with the oil.  Since you (and the additive company) have no idea what the oil company package contains, you could just as easily add something that hurts performance as you could add something possibly beneficial.  The chemists who formulate a modern oil like Mobil 1 are probably a little more qualified to decide what needs to be in the oil than you or I.

BTW, have you ever heard the expression "snake oil"?  Most oil additives fit into that category, especially the ones like Slick 50 that promise all kinds of BS benefits (wonder if it regrows hair?).  Put that stuff in the same category as the "Turbulator" fuel economy improver.  Keep your money in your pocket, or if you just have to spend it go buy something useful like another chrome doodad.

I have to agree.... don't waste your $$ on "snake oil".  I think you would be better off spending the extra $$ on changing your oil more often... if you want to do something extra for your motor ;)

add one more...

Dad was in the high performance oil industry for years, worked for a number of companies that sold to racing and industry...the packages in the oil are sufficient and could get compromised by another product.

I had a LOT of additives in the red bike's tranny gear oil several months ago.  Big ones.  Little ones.  Shiny ones.  Sharp ones.  Pointed ones.  Dull ones.  Chunks, slivers and splinters.  Take it from the red bike, additives aren't all they're cracked up to be.

None of us want those types of additives in any of our holes.  Still haven't figured that one out yet unless you have Don.  Pretty bad when you have to stick something in the drain hole just to get the fluid/additives to drain out.  Not a pretty sight.
