Am I comparing apples to oranges?
« on: August 28, 2008, 10:12:23 AM »

As a lot of you know, I am waiting for the right CVO Ultra (103, or 110) to come along.

In the mean time, I've been doing the other bad thing which is thinking. Over on HTT, I posed the question, How does my '01 with AMS Heads and 96.4" kit, Andrews 26g cams, Zippers 50mm TB and T-Max compare with the stock HD 96"? In other words 96" vs 96". I realy like the way my bike runs, I just want something newer and dependable since I just went through ANOTHER stator while on the road. Most of the HTT folks said that there is no comparison, and that my mildly built engine would out do a stock 96". They added that a the newer engine could also be built to equal or beat my bike. That much I pretty much knew, but having never ridden the new TC 96, and with nothing to compare my bike to I had to ask those who have ridden both. But if I have to build a newer 96 to at least match my current bike, why not buy one already built like a stock CVO 103/110?

So my question to the CVO world, is how does my built '01 engine compare to a stock CVO 103 or 110. I say stock 103/110 because for the most part, except for air cleaner, exhaust and maybe an FI tuning system, most, not all, but most CVO owners leave the engines alone. You don't see too many CVO owners adding larger juggs, pistons, cams and getting head work done. Is that because the stock 103/110s are equal to my current build, and don't need the extra work, or because CVO owners would rather leave it "CVO stock" for resale value and collectability?

Having said all that, my current build is my starting bench mark. In other words, my next bike has to run at least as well as what I have now.

Thanks

I had a 04 Pumpkin with the 103", and my cousin had a 05 Ultra with 95" motor, headquarter heads, headquarter cams, high flow, exhaust, O2 sensors, bigger throttle body, and a couple of other things.  When we went out and hooked them up we where dead even until 3rd gear and I started to pull him.  Hope this helps :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :drink: :drink:  P.S.  Just stop thinking about it and get the CVO.  Even after doing all this work you still have a 2001 Ultra with a good motor.  SCREAMINCHICKENSRULE aka SCREAMINEAGLESRULE

Okay, that's what I wanted to know. A stock CVO 103 will run with and eventually pull away from a built 96".

A friend of mine has a 96 motor with head work, exhaust air intake HD race tuner.  He and I got on it from a stop sign and I let him take the lead.  I finally decided enough of this and passed him.  My 07 110 right now has V&H Ovals air cleaner and HD race tuner.  I simply walked away from him.
Another friend of mine has a 06 SE Ultra with the 103 and had new cams, head work Rinehart true duals, HD race tuner, and air cleaner.  I cannot out pull him.

IronHorse,

you are comparing apples and oranges.   You have a better bottom end than the new 96, you should have heads intake and exhaust that flow with more velocity than a stock bike and a cam that out performs a stock cam.

For instance:

I have a buddy Matt with a built 95, heads, pistons and SE204 cam and a VH 2 into 1 and he played with our old buddy rhino on this site and Rhino could not outrun him to 100 mph on his 110 with Zippers 575's and thundermax and rineharts.

You have to consider each bike independently as well as rider skill and knowing when to shift to optimize each build.   Just because people own the bikes doesn't mean they can race.

Your 96 should outrun a stock 96.

And there are plenty of lil ole 95"ers out there that'll blow away stock 103's or 110's! But you can work these motors too! Then it becomes a different ballgame! And don't think people don't redo these CVO 103/110's either! ;)

My '01 95inch with SE203s, 45mm flat slide, V&H shot guns, K&H hi flow and a little head work will beat my '05 SE Fatboy easy but I think with a bit of work thats going to change. :drink:

Okay, so it sounds like depending on a lot of factors, a well built 95/96" bike can run WITH, if not OUT RUN a stock CVO, (at least a 103, maybe not a 110). But as with all things Harley, a little work on the CVO and the tables turn quickly.

So what do most folks do to their CVO since it already comes with larger displacement and slightly more aggressive cams?

I went pretty aggressive with my '08 fxdse2...R&R cycles stage 4 head porting, 10.8 compression, se257 cams, supertrapp 2 into 1 exhaust...6k miles and no problems...really the best bang for the buck on 110's is open aircleaner, performance exhaust, good midrange cams, fuel injection controller...105hp/115tq easy

Totally agree. The SE 251 cams go very well with that package and you'll get the least grief if caring about w.....ty too. Just hope they can get it to stop leaking and that the bottom holds together! ;)

Pardon my ignorance, but I thought it came with SE Air cleaner, CVO freer-flowing mufflers, and decent cams. Isn't all that stuff what makes it a CVO?
I knew about needing an FI tuning system though.

HeHe! Nope! It's a bigger motor, but they're EPA made motors. You need to get it to flow and remap the ECM with something to get them right. What you want to get out of it determines how far you need to go. Other than that, they're just bigger regular HD's! But that SE 251 package below wakes up 110's real nice! ;)
