Gorgeous Historic Virginia
« on: July 05, 2005, 01:38:59 PM »

Wow what a wonderful weekend we just had.  Three days off work, brother in law in town from Vancouver, BC, weather in the mid 80s and low humidity.  The three of us love to ride motorcycles, so Mr. WeCVO and I on our respective SEEGs and brother in law on our 95th anniversary Road King and we were off.  Saturday we put on a little more than 300 miles, Sunday we put on a mid 300 miles and Monday we put on more than 400 miles.  Mostly all two lane back roads with lots of character, twists and turns.  Mr. WeCVO took his lowers off his bike, we raised the shocks as high as we could on the Road King and I got my vents on my lowers adjusted so they would stay open and we declared ourselves ready for anything.

Mr. WeCVO has an unnatural way of remembering roads he has been on, has heard about or seen only on a map, so acting like our personal GPS he took us ... that away ... for some great riding.  Saturday we cruised to Orange County and on up to Sperryville where we road up to Thornton Gap, Alt. 2,304.  We took the very twisty road to the top of the mountain and back down.  The route has hairpin turns combined with drastic elevation, offers incredible panoramas filled with alpine meadows and rolling peaks. Had a real good time!  Raced the rain clouds over Lake Anna on our way home... we won.  Great day!

Sunday we headed for Staunton area and drove over some of the same roads we had traveled during the VA State HOG rally and tackled route 56 again.  My game was a little off this day, so I struggled with that one, but it was still fun.  Gorgeous blue skies, and wonderful scenery.

Sunday, we headed for Smith Mountain Lake.  If you enjoy driving winding mountain roads, consult a map and try approaching Moneta daytime via Route 43 (toughest), Route 116 "Windy Gap", the Blue Ridge Parkway to its VA Rt. 24 exit, or Route 634 "Hardy Road" (easiest).

Wow, gorgeous mountainous area. We had a blast. Asked a local State Park worker for directions to the other side of the lake, even though it was raining lightly ---- he gave us fool proof directions. You know what those are….? Only a fool will follow them.  haa haaa!  Well we ended up on about 5 miles of gravel roads, with wash board bumps to test our shocks, steep down hill, and twisty to end sharply ...  in the lake ----- not a beach, just rutted mud into the water.  My wonderful husband kindly offered to turn my 800 lb bike, which I was feeling all the weight of, around for me so we could ride this road back up to the top with lightning striking all around us and the tumultuous drumming sound of thunder.

Whew, it felt so good to be riding in the rain on black top after that, that I did not mind the twisty road at all.  I had to lean way forward and down low to ride behind my windshield, look over my goggles, as the humidity had risen so high that my goggles kept fogging up.  It was the only way I could see.  No slow going now, as we could see where the blue sky was and we were not wasting any time getting to it. We only rode in rain for about 20 minutes.

We stopped for a late lunch in Lynchburg, regrouped and headed back homeward.  We were making such good time that when we only an hour from home at about 4:30, we headed back across country and took lake view road all the way home.  As in any state or area, a road with lake view in the name, they tend to be twisty and interesting.

We let the bikes, and us, cool down a bit then we washed all the mud and grime off them. A chicken salad sandwich and a cool beverage in front of the TV to watch the fireworks…. Too tired to even consider traveling out to see them in person.

Wow, what a wonderful weekend.  Back to work today to rest from all that fun.  Only one other CVO bike spotted this weekend, even though there were lots and lots of bikes out.     [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Modified This Thread to change the title to include two weeks of road stories, not just one weekend.  07/15/05

Mrs We.
Sounds like you had a good weekend of riding!! You were in my neck of the woods (close proximity) several times this weekend. We did get a chance to cross paths on Saturday however; if only I knew you were going to be back again on Monday maybe I could have met you guys somewhere.

Saturday as you know I was in the area of Orange/Lake Anna where our paths crossed. We had rode up to Fredricksburg to have some wings and enjoy the back roads to and from.

Sunday I had to work. Yea, it's a hard job, but somebody has to do it. So I didn't get any saddle time in that day, unless you want to call riding in a "Quantum" made by Pierce saddle time.

Monday got a late start, had to wait for better half to get off from work before venturing out. I thought this would be wise since on Saturday I took off before she got off, and went to Hooters and had my picture taken with "Hooter Girl". The things you have to do to keep peace in the household. Again another hard job, but I signed up for it (I DO!!). We went to Culpeper Va. for a Car/Bike show and then cruised down Rt. 3. to Fredricksburg, and back down Rt. 20 to Orange/Gordonsville, then to Rt. 33 thru Barboursville and Rt. 29 south to home.

Didn't quite put as many miles as you did this weekend on bike, but did get my goal accomplished of getting close to 10K before my upcoming service. Only need a cruise around town, and then mileage to shop will put me right on the 10k.

I'm going to send you and Mr. We my contact number (cell phone) and the next time you are in the area or expect to be in the area give me a call  [smiley=beerchug.gif]. If I'm off I'm always looking for somewhere to ride too, and I might even know of an event happening in area we can go to.

Ride Safe

In the past two weeks, my husband, his brother and I have put on more than 1500 miles in gorgeous, historic Virginia.  What a pleasure to be riding on Route 10 to Surry to take the ferry over to Yorktown, past Williamsburg and stop at a tavern for crab cakes on the Chesapeake Bay in Jamestown.  Situated on the Virginia Peninsula, Historic Jamestown and the Yorktown Battlefields are connected by the 23 mile scenic Colonial Parkway. Green Spring, the 17th century plantation home of Virginia's colonial governor, Sir William Berkeley, and the Cape Henry Memorial, which marks the approximate site of the first landing of the Jamestown colonists on the Atlantic Coast in April of 1607 are right there. The Colonial Parkway shows a variety of natural resources including extensive wetlands, forest, fields, shorelines and streams, as well as rare, threatened and endangered plants and animals.

Then return home via route 5 with glimpses of the James River plantations on the way by.  With all the leaf cover this time of year, you really got to be looking but you drive right by Bacon’s Castle, built in 1665, Chippokes Plantation, 1854, North Bend Plantation, 1819, Piney Grove at Southall’s Plantation, 1790, Sherwood Forest, home of President John Tyler, Shirley Plantation, Virginia’s first plantation 1613, Smith Fort Plantation, part of the original lands deeded to Pocahontas by her father Powhatan, and Westover, build 1730.

We spent five wonderful days on the Blue Ridge Parkway, sometimes called "America's Favorite Drive". When you are there, you know why. A drive down the Parkway provides stunning, long range vistas and close-up looks at the natural and cultural history of the southern Appalachian Mountains. It is designed as a drive-awhile and stop-awhile experience.  Wildlife is a delight to see along the parkway. When the sun is high, groundhogs sit erect and chipmunks and squirrels chitter and chatter. Whitetail deer are present but seldom more than a glimpse is seen.  The many varied songs of hundreds of kinds of birds are a delight.

At only one stop, the Peaks of Otter, the motor road follows the crest of the ridge into the Peaks area. In the valley formed by Sharp Top, Flat Top and Harkening Hill, there is a lodge and restaurant, visitor center, campground, picnic area and historic farm. The beautiful view from Buena Vista overlook offers a look at the mountain town of Buena Vista. Around you see the magnificent mountains rising straight up from the valley below. The green valley extends as far as your eyes can see.

The temperatures are several degrees cooler on the mountain, so in the intense heat we have been experiencing, it is a favored destination.

Attached is a picture of Tim, my husband’s brother racing by us at one of the stops ----- We named this pic “See Ya!”  You can see the next curve just ahead of him.  What an absolute blast.

Sorry, flhtcse2004, we knew we were in your stomping grounds, but we were selfishly keeping to ourselves to not miss one moment of Tim's visit. He had never been to see us in more than 20 years of our being together and we didn't want to share even a moment.   [smiley=laugh.gif]Tim loves to ride motorcycles, has been riding since he was barely 13, and just does not have the luxury of owning such motorcycles as we are used to riding.  So when we had an extra in the garage for him, Oh Yeah Baby! was he excited!  And he tends to go on 20 - 40 mile rides at his home, so don't you think he thought he had died and gone to motorcycle heaven to have two whole weeks vacation, an older brother who likes to put on some miles and destinations like we have here to head for.  He went home a very happy man. We are left here a little bit sad.

Next time we will be calling, and if any of you are in the south Richmond, VA neck of the woods and don't mind riding 300 - 450 miles a day, give us a ring. We've definately got some nice roads mapped out.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Mrs We
Not a problem I understand totally. Not to worry we will catch up and get to ride sometime. I'll just let you and Mr. We buy me ice cold refreshments  [smiley=drink.gif] for all the times you were in my neck of the woods and didn't call me. Deal?  [smiley=beerchug.gif]

David, the new Lockness Monster?

We have really been riding and having a whole lot of fun this year.  We used to live in Northern VA and have just one year ago moved about 150 miles south in VA and are just adjusting to the new roads available to us.  It is all very good.  We have seen a lot of great sites lately, and not having to fight the traffic home at the end of the day is priceless.   [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] [smiley=1syellow1.gif] [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] [smiley=1syellow1.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif] [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] [smiley=1syellow1.gif] [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] [smiley=1syellow1.gif]

Yeah MrWe, it's amazing how fast we can adjust to a new threshold of pain, huh?  Pretty soon the threads on gas mileage of the CVO's will become as popular as the HP/TQ Dyno Runs!  Har!   [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] spyder

What a most fabulous weekend this weekend.  I had to ride solo Saturday, but my husband and I got to get out and put 300 miles on yesterday in the 80 + degree temperature that we were blessed with.  Had the most fabulous fortune of running into some members of this site; [highlight]PROMAX3, Ty1on2, VAEagle.[/highlight]
PROMAX3 rode into the partking lot of the dealership after the chapter meeting and it hit me in the pit of my stomach to see my bike riding towards me.  Of course, it wasn't really my bike, but it caught me speechless for a moment.  I introduced myself and was throughly surprised that PROMAX3 knew all about me and my bike.  We each admired the other's bikes and talked some and it was a great thing.  I was real proud to show off the new additions that my husband put on my bike during one of those winter weekends.  He has added the saddlebag guard, the nostalgic rails, the chrome filler strip to replace the painted ones and removed all the extraneous mounts for tour pak in the full out position.  Let me just say that this is one gorgeous look on the bike with the tan leather solo seat.  Chrome baby, chrome.  Sorry our camera has broken, so no way to take any pics.
Then on Sunday on the ferry across the James River we got to meet Ty1on2.  He has the 06 haze fatboy and I did not even know that color existed, it was the first time I have ever seen it and boy did it look great.  Again we admired each other's rides and rushed to get ready to depart the ferry.
And of course we met up with VAEagle at the Bayside HD open house.  I am still amazed at how we were able to find each other in such a huge crowd.  VAEagle has a gorgeous Haze 06 ultra classic.  Wow, that baby really shines in the sun.  We admired the mods on his bike and chatted a bit, then it was time to start our homeward ride.
Amazing how we had fall, then two weekends of winter and spring is now in full swing.  All the phlox, daffidils blooming everywhere, the trees are pushing out their cotton ball like spring blooms, the grass is turning the lush dark green of holly.  It is just starting to make it hard to see the James River Plantations as we screamed by them.  And our bikes were perfomring beyond perfection.  Seemly enjoying the day as much as we were.  Yes, I love living and riding in Gorgeous Historic Virginia.   :D [smiley=cherry.gif]

MrsWe,
You coming to Waugh's "St. Patty Day Sale" this weekend or Cycle Expo 2006 The Agony & Ecstasy? I've only got Saturday off this weekend and not sure if I'll be able to make it to the Cycle Expo. Along with the sale at Waugh, Shenandoah Valley H.O.G. is having a Chili Cook-Off & Poker Run and sale at dealership. I just hate missing a sale at H-D Dealers, that is the time to stock up on some of the things from my wishlist. :D

Definately not the expo - been there and seen that too much, but Orange sounds intriquing.  mmmmm Husband has spent the last three weeks working 13-18 hr days, one day off in all the time.  Today we both had app'ts at a sleep clinic where he proved how much he needs help. He sat down to wait for the Dr., not even three minutes, and fell sound asleep.  Then while in her office he nodded off a bunch more times.  Yes, I think he has a problem, mostly exhaustion.  So we have to play the trip by ear, so to speak.   ;) [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

MrsWe,
I probably will not make the expo either. I'm sitting here now hoping it will warm up just a tad, temperature from WeatherUnderground is only showing 32 now. Hopefully it will warm up enough so I can ride the bike to Waugh's. I have a couple of parts I want to get, and like to save when ever I can.

BTW - Tell Jamey to stop working so hard, can't get everything done in one day.
