Check Engine Light
« on: July 05, 2005, 04:35:49 PM »

I just installed a PCIIIusb and now after starting the engine, the check engine light will come on for a few seconds and then extinguish. Any ideas?

Mine does the same thing. I don't think it is a problem and have ignored it . I will start to worry if it comes on and stays on!

Something occured causing a "fault code" to store in the system.  That is the indicator advising so.  Needs to be re-set at the dealer.

The code probably originated when you "tampered" with the system (installed the PC)and started it up the first time.  It tried to figure out what changed, and stored a code regarding the change.

Just ignore it.  If it bugs you have your dealer re-set the system.  It could come back though.  I'm guessing most owners have it and never really notice it.  The system will probably see it everytime you start the bike (see it as a foreign entity in the system) and store a code about it.  I'm thinking it's probably unavoidable.

Mine does it too.  My tech said don't worry, he will clear it the next time I bring it in. He mention the term false code.   My bike runs fine as in so fine.

I'm kind of apprehensive about taking it to my dealer. They don't approve of the PC's as far as warranty goes. Could I remove the PC before I take it to them without them knowing? Someone told me they can tell whether a PC had been connected.

Someone was worried unnecessarily.  When it's off it's off.  If you want to be exceptionally anal about it be sure and remove the velcro pads from beneath the battery box.  Then it's just all gone....  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Hey Osma, here's how I understand this ... you're going to remove the PC and take  your bike to the dealer to have the fault reset.  Are you then going to reinstall the PC? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  Dah huh ... if you do, you start at square one again ... you'll get the fault again ... eventually.   [smiley=nervous.gif]

That's exactly what will happen.  Live with the warning light, or without the PC.   [smiley=beerchug.gif]

Something else to remember.  If the PC doesn't cause it to throw an error code in regular use (after the initial installation) the codes eventually clear.  I don't remember how many start/stop cycles it takes but the error codes don't live forever.

FWIW, on mine I picked up a code during the PC install as well.  I think it was a couple of weeks later it had cycled out.  Never came back again until I removed the PC thinking it was giving me a driveablility problem.  Got the fault code again upon reinstallation and first ignition.  Couple of weeks later it was gone again.

I've done a couple of PC's and not seen the error code. I have a buddy who did one and got the code but it did clear on its own a  few weeks later. I would just leave it be for a few weeks and see what happens...

I do remember reading somewhere that you can clear a historical code by starting it 50 times then it would reset itself assuming the error hadn't resurfaced.

Yeah Cat, I honestly don't have a clue how many on/off cycles it takes to clear it.  But they do clear out after a period (assuming no repitition of the error of course).

If you had them install the PC, it doesn't matter what it is doing, it should be part of the warranty.  According to the MoCo tech support, unless it can be traced to the part in question, they can not affect the warranty.  And unless it comes out of the Screamin' Eagle book, with the crossed flag emblems, it falls under all the factory warranties.  Before I put on the RT, and true duals, I had long disucssion with the MoCo to clear up some of the things I was hearing about what was and was not under warranty.  As it stands, the burden of proof is on the service department, not the owner of the bike.
The service department has to without question that the problem was the fault exclusively of the part in question. [smiley=confused5.gif]

Striker I'm not sure I'm reading your post as you intend it.  But just in case I am need to say one thing.  While it is true that the factory warranty shouldn't be affected by the addition of a third party part unless that third party part directly leads to the failure in question it is not the case that the Harley factory warranty expands to cover third party parts even if they are installed by the dealer at time of purchase.

The factory warranty is a warranty on the factory product.  It can be expanded under the agreed contract provision they offer to cover some Harley parts added at time of purchase (though those additions don't extend to the Service Contract if you bought that).  But Harley will never be responsible (in an OE warranty sense) for a part they didn't build or sell under their own name.  So a Power Commander installed when a bike was purchased has its part warranty from the Power Commander people and whatever labor warranty the dealer ties to its installation, but not from Harley Davidson as part of the factory warranty on the bike.
