Ask them how long the warranty on the fix lasts.

Warranty is a good question!  Bought my '08 Ultra with the se 110 engine at Christmas, put 10k on it but it has been in the shop almost as much as in my garage!  It has stranded me 3 times on trips--I am worried about when the warranty expires and asked dealer for extended warranty but no luck so far.

Got mine back last week for the head recall. Make sure they do a leakdown test to see if they need to replace the rings. (this is part of what they are supposed to do anyway) Have them measure to see how much your liners have slipped, 006 or higher is Harleys spec for the cylinders to be replaced.

Ask them if they have to change rings, would they hone the cylinder also?  You don't want new rings in old cylinders without a good cleaning.

Where are you taking it? Trenton, Mills or Brian's?

Just for what it's worth... I had my bike in at 5500 miles for leaking gaskets. They replaced the gaskets and did not hone the cylinders or replace the rings. The bike started leaking again about 1000 miles later.  I also noticed I was getting some oil carry over into the air cleaner which I never had before they changed the gaskets. My assumption is the rings did not seal after they replaced the gaskets the first time. Than the head recall came out so I took it back. This is why I would recommend you make sure they do the leakdown test before they tear it down. Also check the cylinder liners for slippage. I read the instructions that the dealer gets from Harley and they are supposed to do a leakdown test as part of the service to see if rings are needed.

I did get them to change the cylinders and pistons on ny bike it due to the fact I had a knocking sound between 2500-3300 rpms. This was not the normal valve noise you get with all Harley's. Harley admitted to the dealer that the noise is caused by the short pistons they put in the 110's and it is now considered normal, period. Harley did not want to replace the pistons or cylinders for the dealer at all. I called customer service and after a long conversation they decided to replace them with the understanding the noise will probably return and is normal. They also said the only reason they did it was for customer satisfaction. I have put about 800 miles on it now and have no oil carryover and the noise is gone. Hopefully the noise does not return or it is not as loud as it was. Harley did the right thing for me, but it took some arm twisting. I am a happy camper now!!

Great, one more thing that will affect the longevity of these engines.  Nothing like pistons rattling around in the bores.  Or is that to reduce compression and friction so they don't run so hot?

Just got mine back from the "fix". Started weeping at 12k, leaking bad at 20k, valve guids bad too. Had se251 cams, push rods, etc., 50mm tb, chrome inner primary, freedom pipes added. Runs much stronger now.
Pistons are removed with the jugs so honing an rings are not necessary unless leakdown proves otherwise.
Cold start knocking is common among most short skirt piston combustion engines. It is my understanding that if it continues throughout the heat cycle there is a problem.

Probably should have noted that the knocking sound I was getting between 2500-3300 was only when the engine was at operating temperature. Actually, the hotter the engine got the louder the knocking was. Harley said it would not effect the life of the engine. Who knows for sure.  I am taking it back to Dyno Jet to have the tune checked next Tuesday. It will be interesting to see how much difference there is with the new heads, cylinders and pistons.

They are pretty good with it and thorough.  Let me know if you need ride back or anything else.

Good Luck.
