It is so funny to read this post, while on our way back from our ride to Maine, Nova Scotia, headed back to Florida we decided we would sweep a little out of the way and do the York Tour, and as they walked us through the factory and passed the paint department the tour guide went on to say how it was no secret that Harley Davidson had the highest quality paint jobs in the industry, even added that HD was the envy of the industry and the standard others aspired to be like.
Adds more to my feeling that when HD stepped up production a few years back they left their high standard of Quality behind, because they were the benchmark of quality for many years, and that was a brag they had that no one even argued with, one of the key reasons my wife and I bought Harley, we have a friend that just traded his second Ultra in for a Gold wing because he was tired of the break downs, motor went on him with 1300 miles on it and left him in Origon state from Florida, that was the start, so much else went bad on the bike that HD finally said give us $1200 and we will give you a new Ultra (Peace officer unit) the top end went on that bike at 1600 miles, that was the start of problems with that one, Harley begged him to trade that bike (with 50K miles) because they were always fixing it, so he did, only not on a harley.
He has only had the wing for about 5 weeks so we'll see how this shakes out.
I have never minded paying the price for a HD because I felt I was paying extra for the best money could buy, but If I ever go through what he did I will give the other American brand a try as they seem to have a pretty good rep.
We have owned 6 harleys since 02 and loved all but one and still own 3 currently, with the jury out on one that is in the shop for motor work, now into it's 6th week.
Every one/company can have a bad run and HD is no different and we are not ready to give up on Harley yet.
Slick
