I was told a Header pipe from the 09 96 inch motor is the same animal as the 110 header minus the cat guts. this header may dyno as good as any afermarket pipe except for a two into one.

This is a correct.  The standard 09 headers do not have cats and will fit the 110 engine.  The only issue is it's a bit pricey.  I chose to drill my cat.   Drilling was cheaper and much easier than pulling the header.

Just for fun, I grabbed my coffee, put my '09 Ultra on the rack, pulled off the right muffler, and shined a light up the header pipe. Guess what's there?
Yep, cat.
There is no cat in the muffler, and the actual cat material in the head pipe is actually not "round" but, more egg shaped to match the coutours of the header assembly. I remember looking at the parts book, and, if I remember correctly, there is only one part # for the header pipe, catalyst equipped!
I know the aftermarket will come up with something soon, I like the looks of the new exhaust system, and hope to see something similar in the aftermarket, but, with a little more flow. The new engines 96-110 are good for 100 HP without much trouble, if they can just breathe.

It is nice to have so many of you doing the research on the new bikes. I am sure you will not get as much information from the dealer as you can get here! Thanks from a new TwinCam owner!

My guess is (for the 09s anyway) that if MOCO chicken choked one, they probably got em all....  :nixweiss:

John, Did you just drill in the mesh and put some holes in it, or did you drill and totally remove.  From the pics, I have seen, it appears doesn't appear to be much.

My connection at HD assurres me the 09 96 headers do not have cats. only the 110 motors. California is a different story. I am guessing there will be people installing true duals on their Ultra's and selling the stock pipes cheep on Craig's list not knowing the true dual systems will rob up to 10 HP. Removing the cats will be the cheepest route but eliminates all options for future warantee or resale. The stock 2 into 1 and the equal lenth is the perfect combination for making good power. the only question may be the cross under pipe. The stock pipe minus the cat most certainly will support 100HP and 110ft lbs. Aftermarket 2 into 1's may squeeze out a bit more power but are not an aesthetic option for the 09 SERG. I also have been told all dealer installed HD race tunes for the 09 110's support "with cats" only.

I also have been told all dealer installed HD race tunes for the 09 110's support "with cats" only.

Whoever told you this was feeding you a line of BS.  Race tuners are programmable to anything you want.  They are also designed for race use only, which releases the dealer and MoCo form liability.  As soon as a dealer loads the SERT update to the bike they are doing so illegally if the bike is going to be used on the street.  Whoever applies the map has to accept the software terms and conditions before they can do anything.  There are not many cats on the track!

FYI, MoCo releases two basemaps that cover both the 08's and 09's.  The 08's had the cats in the muffler whereas the 09's have the cats in the header.  The description on the standard 110 basemap (205UJ003) says it is for bikes with a SE Air Cleaner and Race Exhaust.  Changing to race exhaust on an 08 would remove the cat.

FWIW, I initially applied the basemap above to my bike after removing the cat and changing to free flow 1 3/4" Fullsac baffles.  I did the full track run tests on the bike as well as put it on a dyno.  It was running perfectly.  No popping, no surging, good power, etc.  I could have ran it that way forever if I wanted.

Attached is the dyno run.  The red line is stock with no changes, the blue line is no cat, Fullsac exhaust, and standard SERT basemap with no tune.  I went from 78.3 HP to 86.2 HP and torque increased form 90.9 to 105.0.

Did someone say that I could buy a new head pipe (from a 09 96inch engine) that does not have the CAT in it?

If that is true any idea of a part number? I want to make it easy for my dealer to swap out the pipe,

And before you ask I am not up to drilling out the CAT (I dont even change my oil)

Yes, it was stated somewhere on the thread that the 09 96" motors do not have Cats. You can read the whole thread and find it if you want

You may want to actually check your bike, my '09 bagger has a cat in the header collector, the parts book at the dealership shows one part # for the collector, and there is a notation about "catalyst" equipped. There MAY be another part # for this collector, but, I have not seen that yet. If, in fact, the motor co. produces a header collector WITHOUT a catalyst, that would be nice to be able to swap out this piece without drilling out the cat, etc. The '08 cvo and other lines had cats in the mufflers. This, of course, applies to Ca. bikes. Not too sure about the rest of the country. All I can see in the parts books seem to indicate that the part #'s are all 50 state.
There was a major change in '09 with the frame, exhaust system, ecm programming, etc, etc that you can read about on other threads here. Factory is constantly making "upgrades" to the new bikes. I'm just hoping they have the engine sorted out! I hope this helps some.

It is very easy to confirm if you have a cat or not.  Just pull the right pipe and look into the header toward the engine.  Anyone can remove the pipe.  It only has a clamp at the front where it connects to the header and two screws at the rear.  It will pull right off.  Just twist it from left to right and pull.

If you have one you will see a screen door looking thing blocking the pipe.  Here's a picture of what mine looked like.  If it is open as far as you can see then you don't have one.

MikeD,

It would be interesting to know what the price would have been from an HD Dealer (Jenni at Tri County with 20%off) for the Header to see how close it was to the eBay selling price.
